Wow that guy before you had one out of control glissade. Your's looked much safer. Thanks for posting the photos...I really have to get up to Alaska sometime.by edg - General Discussion
Quoteyosemitejim I thought that they should rebuild the trail, until I saw how small the viewing area is. Then I pictured the Mist Trail throngs piling up at the little rail to get a look. Perhaps it is best the way it is. On second though, you're totally right. That would not be a pretty scene with all those people clamoring for photo ops against that tiny raining.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Shame they couldn't rebuild that trail, it such a cool viewpoint for as close as it is to Happy Isles.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Congrats on winning the lottery! Instead of trying to get lucky with the lottery again, this year I decided to take the "scenic" route from Crescent Meadow via the High Sierra Trail I'll second the Whitney Portal Store message board recommendation. That's a great suggestion. Had I had more time I would have done just that to void the crazy parking and stretch the legs.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Also, be sure to get there super early if you want to find parking near the El Cap picnic area. I didn't show up until 5ish and it was completely parked up. Between the lack of parking and the lack of water, I decided to wait until next year to try to get the shot. Here's a head-on shot at 5:32 from the east end of El Cap meadow. I'm heading up there this Sunday; really hope there's water. I'm going to follow the suggestions in this blog post: http://blog.andrewkee.com/2010/02/23/photographing-yosemites-horsetail-falls/ From the blog: QuoteViewing Locations There are two popular viewing locations, both giving a slightly different view of the falls. The first is from the El Capitan Picnic Area off of Northside Driby edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was surprised by this too. It is prohibited in Yosemite: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/weapons.htm QuoteThe possession, use, or discharge of pepper spray (including bear spray), pellet guns, and BB guns in Yosemite National Park is prohibited. Apparently it's disallowed by federal regulations, but park superintendents can overrule the regulation and allow it: http://www.nationaby edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's still a gravel surface, but it's two lanes wide. Incredibly fast response; I expected a much longer closure after seeing those photos. Anyone have a more recent photo of the slide area?by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I wish they would add a rain check clause to the permit. I think a lot of people would be more willing to turn around in threatening weather if the permit was good for the next day or could be exchanged for a permit later in the season. On the whole though, this is a step in the right direction. I especially appreciate the priority given to people who want to do HD as part of a longer wilderby edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I went up to May Lake last weekend. The hike in from Tioga Road (since May Lake Road is closed) is easy and almost totally snow free, but nothing special. The lake itself is frozen solid and fun to walk around on. There were a few other folks up there, but it was not nearly as crowded as Tenaya Lake. I wanted to climb up Hoffmann, but my friends weren't up for it. Mount Hoffmann by edg13by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I heard the same thing from the Yosemite NPS twitter account. No closure until snow. https://twitter.com/#!/YosemiteNPS/status/156908741462200320by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
