QuoteMom I've been lurking around this great message board for a week and decided to register. You guys are very helpful. Here's my situation: I have reservations for the High Sierra Camps in mid-August, specifically Vogelsang and Merced Lake. We hiked into the Merced Lake area from the JMT along the Echo Valley trail on Thursday of last week. We checked out the backpackers campground bby riverkat - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteplawrence Quoteriverkat When we hiked to Tuolumne Meadows, we took a day, drove the car to the Valley and rode YARTS back to TM and stayed the night in the BP camp (Which is not a backpackers c.amp at all...its really just a walk in unles all those people are planning on pulling those coolers with them!) and continued with our trip. Quotetomdisco If you wanted to hike Lyle Pass to the Minarets and come out at Mammoth for the purpose of picking up the Yarts bus I presume one would go from Minaret Lake to Devil's Post Pile and then take the Mammoth Pass/Reds Meadow trail to its trailhead at Horseshoe Lake. How does one get from there to the nearest Yarts stop, presumably in Mammoth Lakes? Is this a hitch-hike on Rt. 10? I'mby riverkat - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechick-on . Conditions at the moment I would assume to be similar: https://picasaweb.google.com/yosemite.chick.on/ParkerDonahue I'd recommend the route we took cause it was a blast... but I guess you have to mark off the trail. Quotechick-on So you are worried about Rush? And not Minaret and Shadow? Me tinks there is a reason the PCT and JMT splits in this area... Have you called Inyo and asked about those creeks? I guess we worried about Rush because that is all we heard mentioned on the PCT journals...given that the PCT and the JMT diverge in this area, that might be the reason. Guess we will have to ask whenby riverkat - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi there! Been reading these boards off and on an think you folks are a pretty good source of info. I'd like to tap into your collective resources. We are heading out to do the last 60 or so miles of the North end of the JMT in a few days. We are going in at Red's Meadow and heading North (easier to get a permit). So are the various groups and bands of Indians that I hear mentioned....are they grouped as they are primarily based on Languages? Does your perspective of your relationship to the Shoshones come from your beliefs about the origins of creation or is the perspective based on hostory alone...that is to say are there stories that describe how one unified band eventually split into two. Wow... very cool stuff. I like that your pictures provide fact instead of the stereotype images from hollywood. No buckskin pants....I didn't think that was quite right. So I notice these folks do not smile much in these pictures. Is that a cultural thing? Glad to know that some are still preserving their culture. Interesting...thanks for addressing the clothing issue. Interesting that the women wore a dress -like garmet. No pictures of the guys though. The basket seems to be culturally huge to thes Paiute people. They are beautiful. So did this group live in Yosemite year round? Did they travel through out parts of the park or further? QuoteUlysses61 Every time I am on the JMT or on the Half Dome Trail I see hundreds of people who have obviously never done a days worth of hiking in their lives. They generally carry a gallon jug of water in their hands. They have no backpack, no sunscreen, no hat, and proper footwear is haphazard, at best. It's always puzzled me. That was intersting reading.... thanks for posting that. I love the faces of the people in the pictures. What is curious to me is that many of the people are wearing the clothing of the white man. Howdy, Been reading these boards and this is my first post..... About the backpackers's CG at TM...
