They take down your credit card number and charge you full price for the Garcia if you never return the can. They expect the can back in two weeks, if you need it for longer than that let them know. They can be dropped off at any of the wilderness centers in Yosemite, or returned by mail.by KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I thought nobody in the world faxes anymore, but the wilderness permit reservation likes faxes and seems to process them right away. So if you have access to a fax machine, send in your request for two more permits for June 4th that way. Your day 2 looks very mellow, it's only about 5.5 easy trail miles from Lower Cathedral Lake to Middle Sunrise Lake, you'll be there by lunch time. I don't think the campground in TM is open yet which means the backpackers part is also closed. This is because the campground will not yet have water, sewer, electricity or garbage pickup. A wilderness permit to Glen Aulin is fine, no need to do a pass-thru one. The High Sierra camp in Glen Aulin is still closed, so there are no tent cabins or restaurant, but you can still camp there no problemby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'd do Glen Aulin, it will cover new ground for you and it is really the perfect hike for this time of year. I was in Yosemite this past weekend and there is essentially no snow at all below 8500 feet. So Tuolomne to Glen Aulin should be snow free except for maybe a few patches under the trees. The creek crossings are Delaney and Dingley, just walk across slow and steady and be prepared to getby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Soup and a sandwich makes for a nice lunch. You can find "cup of soup" in different varieties such as pea, chowder, corn or black bean, in most grocery stores. Repackage by throwing out the actual cup and put the contents in a snack size ziplock bag. On the trail just heat water, each of you bring out their own cup and soup mix, pour the water into the cup and you're done. Sandwich coby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Did you leave your water filter behind at Indian Rock Arch? If so we found it. New and expensive looking water filter system found sitting on a rock close to the natural arch. We lunched there on Saturday May 12 and asked everybody coming and going if they left it behind, but nobody had. Discussed for a long time whether to leave it or turn it in to lost and found. Decided on the latter and turnby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I don't think permit quotas in Yosemite have changed in years. Remember distinctly in 2009 worrying that there were only 6 reservable HI passthru permits per day and I needed 5 of those for our group. But I faxed in my application on the first available day and got the permits. This year there are still 6 reservable passthru slots, and it was probably the same even 20 years ago. This is photo taken from my tent in the old abandoned campground that you are asking about. Here are instructions on how to find it. As you leave Little Yosemite Valley campground there will be a sign that says something like "Day use only. No camping for 2 miles." Follow the trail for two miles until you get to another sign that says "Day Use Only" which marks the end oby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

If it were me, this schedule would be far to rushed. That being said here are my top tips: - No need to stop for fuel. Buy it at the store in Tuolomne Meadows which is open until 6 pm or maybe even later. The store is only a couple miles down the road from your TH. - If you do arrive at the 120 entrance after 5 pm, as others have mentioned, there is the option of taking a detour to the Hetch-Heby KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I was going to say May 3rd to be with hikerchick, but also because I thought the process might go something like this: They start plowing on Monday April 16 per customary. It takes them a week because there is essentially no snow. It takes them another week to make sure avalanche zones are safe. 18 days in the back country = nice! Random thoughts in no particular order: Shadow lake is not very interesting and besides as Basilbop points out they discourage you from camping there. Go to Ediza instead. Beautiful. Or Nydiver if you are adventurous, there is an informal trail most of the way from Ediza to the closest of the Nydivers. Garnet is also fabulous. I think you'll have to take the 1:30 pm YARTS bus from Merced. According to the YARTS schedule you linked to the 5:30 pm bus only goes as far as Yosemite Bug. Yosemite Bug is a hotel outside the park, just a few miles after the town of Mariposa. The 5:30 pm run also does not operate on weekends or holidays.by KatyAnderson - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
