No, we were not there but we want to go there since it looks like a spectacular location for a 360 degree panorama and it doesn't look too hard to get to. We were on the lower ridge in between lower and upper Cathedral Lakes. Here's the full panorama image. The red arrow points to Peak 10450. We took our hike to Peak 10450 above Cathedral Lakes on Saturday. We took the climbers trail to Lower Cathedral Lake. The trail looked to be completely unaffected by the winter and there was only a few small patches of snow left. Of course there was more water flowing into the lake than I had seen before but crossing it was not an issue. The meadow to the east of the lake was another story. "I'm not content with that skimpy little rail," Kiryakous said. I cringe when I read comments like this. If people like her had their way you wouldn't be able to do anything in the park. Vernal Falls has a skimpy railing?! How about Taft Point? How about Oh My Gosh Point? Or the countless places with no railings at all? Has she ever been to Yosemite before? Hopefully this goes nowherby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the update. We're thinking of giving it a try this weekend but we'll take the climbers trail to the lower lake instead of the regular trail. It's only 1.2 miles.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow! Not what I'm looking for. Maybe mid August for it to be gone? It's going to be a short season up there this year. Thanks for posting the image.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteplawrence I wasn't comparing the snow in summer or spring landscapes versus the snow in winter landscapes, but just commenting on his blanket statement that snow is not very conducive for panoramic photography.. Okay, I guess I need to use "IMO" more here. I don't find snow pictures very interesting. They all look pretty much the same to me. When I do a panoramic I like to see mby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If you missed the junction there must still be quite a bit of snow. The junction has a sign showing 0.5 miles to the lower lake. As I remember the trail heads uphill to the upper lake and downhill to the lower lake from there. So you got across the meadow and right up to the rocks but couldn't leap the water just before the rocks? That happened to us last October after that early rain except wby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm thinking of trying it next year. I read the above account and thought that it wouldn't something I'd want to do because of getting soaking wet but a photo of Ribbon Falls I took on July 8 makes me think otherwise. http://panoramas.aa6g.org/DeweyPoint/RibbonFalls.html The cloud of mist that there was back in early June is gone and most of the bottom of the falls looks dry but there's stiby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks for the post. That's still a bit more snow than I want to see but by the end of the month I would think it will mostly be gone.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for all the input. After seeing the photo above of the guy hanging onto the slab, I know it's not for me. I'll leave it to the more adventurous types.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm glad there's people like you who like hiking in snow so that people like me who don't like snow will stay away until it's gone. Snow is not very conducive for panoramic photography anyway. Not much scenery, just white.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks! Sounds like waiting a couple more weeks is the thing to do..... much less snow I expect. Maybe the weather will start acting like summer by then. I've been watching the Sentinel Dome cam. I figure the time to go is when I can see no snow in that direction.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Has anyone been to Cathedral Lakes yet this year? I'd like to go but I'd also like to know what to expect before I make a trip. I don't care to hike in snow. I use the climber's trail to the lower lake since it's so much shorter. I'd also like to avoid clouds of blood thirsty mosquitos. I'm thinking about going to peak 10,450 or to the Medlicott Lakes at the end of the month or early August.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great images! I've considered trying this hike but it may be beyond what I care to attempt. I know the approximate route but I don't know exactly where it goes when you reach the end of Sunnyside Bench. In early June I went to Oh My Gosh point and took a large panorama which included what must be the route to Fern Ledge. Below are links to two images of the area, one small and one large. Quotewherever Generally, the trees come down in the winter, and the trail crews work all summer to clean then up. The part that you just hiked was under snow until very recently, and the crews have had plenty to do at lower elevations. My recollection is that the the crews often set up a big work camp just north of the Snow Creek bridge, above all the switchbacks. Hi - I've been reading the forum for awhile and just registered so I could post. My friend and I have been making quite a few day trips to Yosemite to hike and do panoramic photography. I thought I'd make a short post about our hike to North Dome yesterday. This is the first time I had done this hike. We arrived at the Porcupine Creek parking area at 9 am and it was almost filled up. We crosseby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We went to Yosemite yesterday - July 13th to hike to North Dome. The smoke started to become obvious around Don Pedro reservoir and became thicker and thicker as we approached the park on Hwy 120 at 8 am. Just before the entry station we were actually coughing in our car it was so thick, like ground fog. Fortunately it cleared up right after the entry station. So far this season we've been stopped 3 times on the roads by people who stopped in the middle of the road and got out of their cars to photograph bears, once on Glacier Point Road, once on Hwy 120, and once on the valley floor. The worst incident was on Glacier Point Road when the traffic was backed up for a couple miles.
