YOSEMITE, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Yosemite National Park employee that nearly died after getting injured and trapped in the wilderness is back to work in the park. Quotettilley 2) I was coming back from Mammoth Sunday, and the signage on the east side simply said Tioga Pass Open. Which was useless, Tioga Pass has been open since mid-May, I wanted to know about the Tioga Road through the park. So I needlessly drove up to 108. Equally odd for us was to be headed down 395 and into Tuolumne Meadows on Friday with the "Tioga Pass Closed" signs dispby phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Bears are a recurring topic here. This story was on the news recently about a young girl having a scary encounter with a black bear in the Michigan woods. It's worth posting for reference to human and bear behavior and not to instill unrealistic fear: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/bear-attacks-12-year-girl-northern-michigan-19985601 http://abcnews.go.com/US/12-year-girl-thought-goner-bear-by phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It seems like once you get past Ireland Creek and the Potter Point "bend" in Lyell Canyon you have a pretty good view, so between 12 and 14 miles r/t should work. That also gets you into camping range if you have the opportunity. Not my photo, but this appears to be a little farther up the canyon: http://images.summitpost.org/original/335029.JPGby phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Since that's Muir Trail, you'll find many books and web resources to help with trip planning. If you're concerned about your group's hiking ability, maybe consider the River or High Trail to Thousand Island Lake vicinity to get a little farther with less effort on your first day. If you stick with your plan for Garnet, best camping is up the north shore.by phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteMom Yes, I know space can be limited, but I have only a few lunch/snack items and a small bag of sunscreen and toothpaste. So I should be able to cram that into the bear box. I'm buying other meals at the High Sierra Camps (which may entitle me to use their bear boxes) Keep in mind also that the lingering scent of food, etc., can be enough to attract unwanted attention -- whether or notby phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Certainly helps support the argument that this is pretty random when the total number of exposures is considered. (A crap shoot, dare I say?). It sounds like newer-construction signature cabins were too accommodating, at least for the rodent population, and measures are in the works to fix that.by phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Lots of weather sites list conditions for Yosemite Valley and generalize for "Yosemite" -- not very helpful. When we were there several weeks ago, TM was getting afternoon thunderstorms and the Valley was dry and in the 80's. The big test is what you can afford to be without. Some first aid items have an aroma that could make a bear curious. I also feel vulnerable leaving anything in the pack in a ziplock or other packaging that could be associated with food, so I try to make those items less obvious. There's plenty of evidence that bears will use the "chomp first -- taste later" process of evaluating edibleby phantum - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
