Yup, those speeds are useless to me. Cross the lovely Ahwahnee off my list... I won't be able to do much... I have Comcast business at home and am royally spoiled, too. And YES, I would much prefer to spend all my time unplugged and hiking, which is USUALLY how it goes, but I'm trying to get something launched and when the developers can get on it, I have to be there, not much control overby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks all for your comments and suggestions as to where the various signals are strongest - very helpful! I've done more research and it'll cost me $90+ to get the data plan with tethering I need to feed my notebook. My work involves Remote Desktop'ing into servers and some other things that are not as light-weight as email... worth it if the speed is good. Not worth the time/energy/cost if sby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi all! Basilbop and I will be camping with family and friends in the Valley next week. Unfortunately, I'm slammed with work. According to the DNC site, ATT now has 4G available, with strongest signal near the Village (no surprise). Have any of you tested it? Confirm data rates? The Lodge is now down to $6/24 hours of internet service, but I wasn't whelmed when I last used theirby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
According to the shuttle guide on the NPS site (Hope it's a recent one..) El Cap Shuttle runs from 9-6, 10-20 minute intervals.. anyone with experience like to comment? I don't think the shuttle drivers care about schedules. They seem to go as fast as conditions permit.. Except for that break spot at the regular shuttle's #10 spot. .by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
OMG, I never want a shelter, much less a tent unless conditions absolutely warrant it! Rain/seriously strong wind/insane bugs. As I mentioned in nwhkr's Waterwheel thread, with the breeze, there was no condensation, no moisture, nada. Many (most?) nights are like this. My bivy has a bug net window, so when the breeze got strong, I put on my puffy hat and pulled my quilt up a bit more. I'mby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
All! I'm considering this "Backpacking/Travel/Weather/Backcountry navigation advice" and there have been questions about phones and tablets for use as mapping/GPS devices in this forum, so hopefully you won't mind. But just in case there are folks here who don't read the General Discussion forum*, qumqats posted an article there about Earl, a backcountry navigation/communication deviby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yay! Earl is fully funded as of today, with 17 days left to go! They've been listening to feedback ... worked with a radio engineer and it sounds like they'll be adding SDR, and amateur frequencies for licensed amateur radio users, and an external antenna connector. Makes me happy! Here's hoping it all happens/works!by JustKeepWalking - General Discussion
I made it through the Waterwheel Falls hike last weekend - with NO bites! And I'm usually the mosquito magnet! QITNL is probably right about the cold nights keeping them down. It was like paradise strolling through Glen Aulin not being driven insane by the little devils....by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We stayed further down in the canyon between California and Le Conte, and it didn't seem that cold... It was breezy, though, and that kept us free of any condensation on our bivy sacks overnight... Totally dry, no frost nor dew on any gear sitting out- which was all of our gear, basically. I put my puffy hat on, but that was more for wind protection.. Wonder if it really was warmer down there...by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Lovely! Thank you! Beat us to it, but we'll probably post something soon. Busy busy.. It WAS a glorious weekend down there! So glad you all made it!by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Years ago, and I can't currently recall what year, Basilbop and I did the trip you, Torero14, are proposing, except that we didn't stay at either Merced Pass Lake, but stayed in a burnt out bit of forest, second day was Lower Ottoway... stayed on trail the entire way. It was high summer and no snow, no water crossings of note. I can remember bits and pieces of the trip, especially from Lower Ottoby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Balzacomm: solar charger: up, extra weight, but they are working on allowing Earl to charge other devices from its battery. And as Chick-on states, even with the solar charger, it's 10.8 ounces. They say they are using 18% efficient monocrystalline solar cells, so it should be equivalent to the performance of the Goal Zero panels and the like. The panel can't charge devices directly by itself, thby JustKeepWalking - General Discussion
If you are interested in the hi-vis orange pack covers: http://www.shop.backpackingadventuregear.com/Orange-Sil-nylon-Packcovers-Starting-at-orangepc.htm Back a number of years ago, I bought mine from ULA Equipment, who actually bought them from Etowah. Okay. I've lurked enough... Been enjoying reading the site for a while now... I'm Basilbop's wife. I am a gear junkie... Trying to avoid any more new (and mostly unnecessary) goodies, though. Love the gear if it makes me happier/safer out there. You have been warned.... We have the Bristlecone Bivy from Katabatic Gear: http://katabaticgear.com/shop/bristlecone-bivy/ It's ok. I bought it in a rush a year or so ago after friends enjoyed it and I decided to give up shelters just before doing the JMT last year. We push it and use it without the shelter whenever we can. Often that means ice on top of the bivy and between the bivy sack and my quilt. I'm used to it.by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
