Mother, I'm a flatland Midwesterner like yourself, and I won't steer you wrong: EAGLE PEAK Take it easy going up the YF trail and you'll be fine. If you find that you're not up to it, just stop where you are, enjoy the view, and head back down. Any effort required to get to Eagle Peak will be rewarded with a view that you'll daydream about long after you get home. (nobody knowsby AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I always enjoy looking into that fissure in your picture. I've taken a similar shot and showed it to little kids at home, telling them that those are two dinosaur eggs, and when they hatch, some hideous beasts will crawl out of that crack and GET them. Maybe this is why I always end up hiking alone.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If you entered the lottery for a Half Dome permit, you should be able to find out if you were successful by going to the recreation.gov site. Normally, I get in the lottery within an hour of it opening and have gone 4 for 4 in getting my first choice date. This year, I didn't enter the lottery till about 10 days later, and had to settle for my second choice. Coincidence? Anyway, save meby AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've been to Sequoia NP one time, but not as a hiker. Trying to describe the place with words is useless. In front of the General Sherman was a plaque that gave the tree's stats. Height, size, age...(I wonder how often they update those numbers?) Driving home from California, I calculated that there was enough wood in that one tree to make a 2x4 that would reach from the tree to my homeby AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Lots of good ideas/photos rolling in on this topic. Thanks for all the help. I lack any backpacking equipment/skill/knowledge, so day hiking from the Valley always seemed the easy and cheap way to see the most cool sights. I'm getting quite a bit of that territory covered, so maybe going into the back country is the next sensible thing. I've always set up shop at Curry and done whatever round trip day hikes could be done from there. Merced Lake looks like around 30 miles RT, that is where that came from. I've done HD/CR round trip from the Valley as a day hike, (26 or so miles) so 30 would seem possible. The ideas you've both mentioned are things I haven't considered. I'll look into them.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I hope to be in Yosemite in September and am looking for some new spots. Here is a list of places I've heard about on this forum, but have yet to visit: MORAN PT-Accessible from somewhere on the 4FT EAGLE TOWER-Looked (briefly) for a way to get there last year POHONO TRAIL-Never been between Taft and Tunnel View OH MY GOSH PT-Somewhere beyond Columbia Rock MERCED LAKE-Would you try a 30 mby AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Up 4 mile to Glacier Pt., and down Panorama and Mist trails to Valley floor. See every inch of Yosemite Falls and stand at the top of 3 other waterfalls. Visual gluttony of GP. Side trips to Union Pt. and Panorama Pt. Several vantage points of Half Dome, Tenaya Canyon, Clouds Rest, etc. Probably 13-14 miles all told, but you will wish it was longer.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
