Where does that nerve run, and which part of the backpack is likely to pinch it? The pack I'm using now feels quite comfortable with any reasonable load. On one I used for a while, though, the hip belt didn't have any padding to speak of. I resorted to wearing a square of sheepskin on each hip inside my clothing, wool side toward me. QuotequmqatsThe water is from the Merced, and treated somewhere. I don't know if it's a separate water system just for the Comfort Station, or if the water is pumped up from the valley. Almost certainly separate. It's chock full of chlorine (or maybe chloramine) and tastes nothing like the valley water. Thank you. I've seen that tank on topo maps and Google satellite views. I had no idea that well water was pumped up to it, though. I remember drinking from some of the water fountains in the valley (by the Lower Yosemite Fall restrooms, the Visitor Center, etc.) on 90-degree days and wondering how the water got so cold. From the articles I've found online about the lawsuit, I understand the plaintiffs lost. They argued the park negligently created the rock-fall danger, then fby gophersnake - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the info. Looks like I get to research the history of the telegraph lines in the area. QuotewhereverYou've seen the new fancy toilet at the top of Nevada Falls, and what a big deal it is to service it today. Involves a helicopter, I believe. I was wondering about that (and guessing a helicopter, too). This summer I happened to catch a ranger in the area and ask him. He said those were composting toilets (now, anyway). Every time I pass that high-voltage power pole next to the Four Mile Trail (marked 1 on the topo below)... ... QuoteplawrenceI was actually referring to this old trail that connects the Four Mile Trail with Sentinel Dome as it was still shown on this 1970 USGS topo map of Yosemite Valley: Oh, that trail! The cell phone itself would do little or nothing to attract lightning, The person holding it could provide a much more tempting target. So could any trees, rocks, etc., nearby. QuoteplawrenceCould what looks like a trail with switchbacks above the traverse be the trail that connects the Four Mile Trail with Sentinel Dome? I doubt it very much. Here's a Google satellite view of the real switchbacks. Since this is equivalent to a map, north is at the top. All the other pics were taken looking southeast.
