The first time our son did the mist trail, he was seven. We were coming down from Tuolumne Meadows. With a 12lb pack on, he did great, like a billy goat. The problem was the people coming up the trail. It was crowded and there were so many people jumping around and pushing others. I had allot of anxiety around Vernal. The next time we came down, we timed it to be very early, before the crowds.by atomicmonkey - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks for the great post! That brought back some great memories of my first trip to Yosemite in the early '90s. That was the Coleman and cotton trip! My best memory was eating canned chili with fresh caught trout from Lake Emeric. Our ideas of backpacking light was taking the labels of all the cans of chili.by atomicmonkey - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I always hike with my wife...and eleven year old son. We just bought him a new tent and are kicking him out of ours! We also just added an adopted Siberian Husky, so our trips to the park will be limited. I am really looking forward to exploring some of the areas outside the park. I would love to find somewhere like Ten Lakes but without the crowds, I am sure it is wishful thinking but I have pleby atomicmonkey - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks, Chick-on! Those shots of Babcock and Emeric are brilliant. What a great weekend. I guess experience is why you were there and I was here! I saw the weather forecast and pictured a full on Sierra winter storm in my mind. I have a bloody job offer for this weekend threatening my trip to Granite Park. Thanks for the great pictures! Where did you camp? What kind of night time temp did it get down to? I am trying to get up to Granite Park/Italy Pass this weekend to play around. The forecast is showing low twenties on Friday night, probably much lower around 11,500. I think that might be borderline too cold with our gear so we might stay in hotel that night and get an early start on Satby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

For you guys that go to the Sierra all year long, how do you get the best weather picture three or four days in advance and especially from hundreds of miles away? We are heading up week after next for a quick weekend in the high country. We will be prepared for most weather and would love to get the best idea before we set off. Next August, I am planning for 5 or 6 days either doing this route or more likely coming in at the Pine Creek TH and heading to the Bear Lakes area. I am thinking of setting up a small base camp and doing day hikes around the area. I am in love with the pictures of the area and the great trail reports. I just bought and read Steve Roper's book this week and I think I will probably be single mindeby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Gotcha! I think I was in severe dreamland trying to figure out when I can get the family to do this amazing route. I think I just bumped this one to the top of the list over a trip up Cherry Creek... maybe if all goes good, I can do both!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Actually, you can bring a handgun into the NP wilderness, just not into any federal building such as permit offices. There is absolutely nothing in Yosemite that would warrant carrying a handgun except for the mosquitoes!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great video. I guess it is more selfish that I was hoping that the fire did not get to White Wolf. I love some of those meadows. I am sure in a few years the fire area will be exploding with new life.by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
