Emeric Lake is definitely a beautiful lake but so is that whole area. Two weeks ago, I came down Lewis Creek from Lake Evelyn. Vogelsang Lake, the pass, the little tarn near the top of the pass, the view across the pass, the view of Gallison and Bernice lakes and hiking through that incredible meadow made that trail something really special. I wish I was there right now!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
What a fantastic weekend. Thanks for such a great TR and pictures, it was fun to follow along on my topo map. I've had this crazy idea in my head for awhile about going from Ten Lakes x/c to GCT and then out to GA. I have been looking at the topo and trying to convince myself that it might be possible, I even did a little peeking downstream when I was there in June. I have never heard of anyonby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was just at Ten Lakes in June. I told myself that I would like to camp around lake 9021 (as you are coming to the lakes, just before you cross the stream, go right, great meadow next to the lake). I am not sure what the Lake is called. Actually, all the lakes had great places to camp. Great place, I can't wait to go back and explore! Have fun!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. As far as the LNT idea, I look back at my own evolution of what that means. In the early eighties in Colorado, I burned my toilet paper, had a fire every night, didn't have a water filter (I know, that is not a LNT item, just an idea of the evolution). I have learned new techniques to make our trip easier on the environment. I also take pride in teaching my son to hike in "stealth mode.&quoby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. That's great TS! I really look forward to hearing about your planning. I just met two retired ladies at the bottom of Nevada Falls. They were heading to Mt Whitney. They were planning on doing the JMT in 20 days. (they are almost half way done today). I could tell that they are very experienced hikers (they shared some great stories). They had super small packs with large carbon fiber bearby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We just got back from six great days in Yosemite. We brought along my brother in law who has never been out of a city before. I chose to go down the super highway Lyell Canyon route and over Vogelsang Pass and the Mist Trail into the Valley to give him a wide variety of what Yosemite is. He was literally amazed at every new view and I think he is addicted to this "wilderness" thing. Heby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Colorado is great. But the granite and water and a thousand other things keep coming back to the Sierra! We are going up Lyell Canyon and spending the first night at Lake Evelyn, then a quick trip down to Florence Creek (where we will do lots of exploring) then past Lake Merced to one of my favorite camp spots, south east of Bunnell Pt. Then down through the almost Mist Trail to the backpackerby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Another place to put on my growing list of MUST hikes!! After spending a majority of my life in the Rockies, I am quickly coming to the conclusion that the Sierra is a very special place. Obviously, all of these pictures are great but the one of the ridge that looks like a wave about to break with the mist behind it is very cool, I wanted to grab my surf board! Happy birthday JKW! Chick-on, great picture! I would love to ditch my heavy 2 piece tent and go with something like the MLD solomid. One question though, if it rains, do you still get soaked from the ground water? Thanks for taking me along on your trip! I really learned allot and enjoyed your report! Are you going to come back or where is your next adventure going to be?by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nice TR. I will be crossing through there on Monday. I spent 20 years working a job that was chafe intensive. Best defense is dry pants and underwear. If it is hot and you sweat allot, baby powder can help. Once you get chafed thighs, few things can help you walk without tears. This does not surprise me. Last summer while hiking the GCTR, we passed a young couple on the switchbacks heading from White Wolf down towards Pate V. He had Vans shoes and she had a thin canvas street shoe. They only carried a small bottle of water each. They said they wanted to go look at the Tuolumne River. I told them it was a hard day hike with only a few ounces of water. We offered to top tby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

No yoking here! Just did the Raiser to the Kaiser near Huntington Lake, looked more like September than early July. Then, add that to an over active imagination and presto... the Australian desert in Mad Max! So, since this year is so much drier than last year, does anyone have any thoughts on what the lakes near Vogelsang (Vog. lake, Gallison, Bernice, Florence) will be like? It sounds like there might be allot of dry lakes. I am coming up during the last few days of July and would love to spend some time near the lakes around Lewis Creek. I was at Huntington Lake this weekend and my wife and I hiked Kaiser Peak. I took a couple of pictures near the top. I can't figure out what peak is in the pictures. The pictures were taken facing north. It might be in Yosemite or just south of Yosemite. I thought maybe some of you super experienced Sierra hikers might know. In the 80's, I did not have a water filter and drank from hundreds of springs, creeks and rivers all through the Rockies. I guess I was lucky.
