The big drawback is that it weighs 14oz. But since I have worked very hard to get our pack weights down to the mid 20's with food and water, I am going to indulge in a little living! It was more difficult than Via, but it was a little like being at the Ritz Carlton. I frothed a little bit of powdered milk and had a cappuccino blazing hot in my titanium cup! It was a great way to start my day andby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I think it was this forum that had a quick note about going down the creek from TL to GCT. I am very interested in doing this as I remembered seeing this from below in the GCT. We did hike down a bit until I thought about the climb back up and my sea level lungs! The other area that I am chomping at the bits to do is the Cherry Creek. Your pictures of it were great and really got me thinking ofby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
WOW! Small world, that was me. The ranger gave us some great advice, we ended up exploring down the stream aways towards GCT. It was great!! The water falls were cool and the views down the canyon were great. I am not 100% sure that I can make it down the stream to GCT without climbing gear. Would be fun though to go out via Glen Aulin.by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just got back from a long weekend spent at Ten Lakes. This was not my first choice of places to go but one that the Rangers gave us. I am really glad they did, what a beautiful place! The hike up was mostly dry. Halfmoon Meadow had some snow that melted before we hiked back through on Sunday. We did see several large groups camped around the big, main lake. There was no one else around any of thby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
On Friday evening, we had no idea that it was a military jet. It definitely wasn't supersonic. It did get us talking about all the aviation traffic and noise over Yosemite. It seemed like the entire weekend was filled with jetliners flying high over, leaving contrails and noise to remind us that the busy world is just a few miles away. It also reminded me that I was really glad to be where I was!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We were at Ten Lakes and made a comment of how loud it was! I wish I would have seen it, we would have been above them! I have never posted a picture before, I can't seem to figure it out. Can someone point me to Chick-on's post on how to do it or let me know? Thanks!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

If you do the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, you can park at Tuolumne and the Hiker's bus goes right to White Wolf, your car will be waiting when you finish. You can probably do the reverse also but would be hiking to a specific deadline to catch the bus. I think the bus is $7 It is an amazing and fun hike (I will never use "epic" again! )by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I am going to try out this moka thing with that awful powdered milk. If it is not really fantastic, I will leave all that weight behind. I do like the Via packets. I use them when I am on watch, sailing in the middle of the night. Super easy to make. Chick-0n... I weigh 12.5 stone.by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Last summer, I carried 42lbs up the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. I worked all winter to get my pack weight down to about 28lbs with food and water. Most of the weight savings was from leaving heavy cotton clothes at home, leaving my big camera at home and taking a much smaller camera and getting rid of tons of food packaging. But, I am having a serious issue with coffee! At home, I drink oby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks! With all the postings on Cherry Creek, I seem to have a bit of a mind block on everything else. I think the only way to remove it is to go check it out next spring! That area seems to be on the border of YNP, Stanislaus NF and the Emigrant Wilderness. As soon as I take a closer look to see where I want to go, your comment on permits will come to light! How would the permit work? Would you only need a permit from Inyo NF or one from YNP also?by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We use 2L bladders that we fill about half way. We also use a platypus gravity works filter that fills the bladder easily without removing it from the pack. If we camp away from water, we will usually fill up our bladders all the way at the last water stop so we have plenty of water for cooking/morning coffee.by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Two questions: What does a hunter do with his newly murdered bear? A freezer full of bear sausage or a fur coat? Assuming the hunter murders the bear in the wilderness, how does he get it back to his car? The images in my head of trying to get the murdered bear to the car are going crazy.by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi Chick-On, Are you going up near Tuolumne this weekend? If you drive near the Yosemite Creek/Ten Lakes TH, could you give me an idea of what the snow is like? I am going to Ten Lakes in a few weeks and keep seeing all kinds of differing views of how much or little snow there is. Thanks!! have a great weekend!!by atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am not new to the wilderness. For the past 30 years, I have backpacked through the Rockies; Rocky Mountain NP, the Teton's, Yellowstone and Glacier. I am new to Yosemite. It is truly an amazing place! The first time that I went to YV was two years ago. We were hiking in from Tuolumne Meadows. When we reached the top of the Mist Trail, I was amazed at how crowded it was. I was even more amazed aby atomicmonkey - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
