Happy Thanksgiving to all. Long time reader…. We went on a wonderful short and easy hike out of Lee Vining a couple of days ago that I thought I’d share with folks. A (curiosity) search for a GPS (CORS) station led me to Log Cabin Mine Road, a dirt road off of Tioga Pass Rd (off Utility Rd), a short distance north from the Lee Vining junction. Decided that getting to the CORS station wby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Been meaning to post an update, but haven't had time. Final presentation was just Wednesday afternoon, and then I had my son's 8th grade awards ceremony, and tonight my host student's graduation. Tomorrow we go camping. So next week I will give you all an update on the disastrous project. Nothing worked!! Thanks for all the suggestions. All sound wonderful. I may try and go for Canyonlands and Capitol Reef. We saw Bryce last year and sort of some of that area (we spent a couple of nights in Page). Thanks for the heads up on Arches. Also, if by some chance you're into rock collecting or rock hunting, and know of places I should add along the way, feel free to post it. Looking for ideas for parks to visit this summer with kids (13 and 15 year olds) Thanks to suggestions from this group, visited Grand Canyon, Zion & Bryce last year on a road trip and had a fantastic time. QuoteAxis Weevil Sweet maps. I'm intrigued that one of your "Further Distance" nodes is between Tioga Road and the Valley. It seems unlikely somehow. Quotebuster I have the first two maps already made. I can share them when I get back home. Don't mean to sandbag you, but I think these maps might be too easy for a mini-project, more like a weekend assignment. Quotechick-on How about: - How many miles of trail in Yosemite "backcountry"? Hi! I am (for fun mostly) taking a class at our local junior college on GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or map making as I call it. We need to do a 'mini' project (~3-4 weeks long) for our class, on the topic of our choice. I love Yosemite, so I'd like to do something around it. Looking for ideas. Here are a couple I had: 1. Totally unrelated, but I love Gaylor lakes so checked out the thread (glad you can't camp there actually), but recently learned that to get a designation of Napa Valley on your wine bottle, your vineyard needs to be in the Napa Valley watershed. So the watershed is actually the defining factor. And because of that, it has been carefully mapped and evaluated. I'm glad to see him go. Not working there, I don't know anything about the claims, but I think the park has been poorly managed. I did this hike a few weeks ago. Drove up to Glacier Point, left valley at 9, arrived at 10. Group split. A few of us hiked down through Panorama to Mist trail, others drove back to valley. As plawrence said, if you meant the end of the 4th of July week, that could be a reason. 4th of July is often the worst.
