TM winter conditions update 01 February 2022by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Well, from the picture it seemed to me that the photo was taken on the western side of the ridge (or on the saddle) that tops out at its north end at Johnson peak, and that the lake is the lake just to the southwest of Johnson peak (and NNE of Reymann lake as the crow flies). Then I used a search engine to look for "Obata lake", and found this: https://tedmuller.us/Outdoor/Hiking/2012/by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

The first stat they present - parks with largest number of SAR incidents - is sort of interesting, but they provide no analysis or context whatsoever. Your blog comment about Mt. Whitney being in SEKI accounting for the apparently high number of incidents there is more than they provide. I'm curious, for example, in the number of incidents per number of visitors, but they don't present statisby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - General Discussion

Thanks for the info. The admonition about not walking in ski tracks is up on the Yosemite NPS site: "A Note on Etiquette Along the groomed portion of Glacier Point Road, snowshoers should stay to the edges of the groomed road – outside the parallel ski tracks for classic cross-country skiers. Hear hear! Several times I've had a campground reservation (or a wilderness permit) that I couldn't use, and I've had reservations I did use where the group decided to cut the trip short by a day once we were already encamped. I always cancel (if in advance) or let the rangers know (if already on site) so that others can use the spot/permit. Not clear to me how this helps them: YARTS leaves from the valley late to TM in the afternoon. They want a ride to TM earlier in the day. Did I miss something?by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I have a reservation for several nights at TM later this summer - 2 cars, 6 people. Looks like part of my party will only be able to arrive two days late. I understand from the NPS site that the second vehicle will be able to get into the park by providing a copy of my reservation and my driver's license: "Groups with lodging or camping reservations, wilderness permits, and Half Dome permiby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
You're correct about the climbers' trail splitting from the trail to BL, look in Shaffer's book for a description. Even if you stay on the climbers' trail, all is not lost - near the base of cathedral peak, the climbers' trail heads north, you can go off trail downslope to Budd Lake, or south toward the saddle between Cathedral and Echo peaks, then head east .by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I think there's some confusion, at least in my own mind. There are no shuttle buses running within the valley this year (nor were there last year). In past years there were shuttles (a) in the eastern end of the valley (frequent, the Valley shuttle) as far west at Yosemite Lodge going to Ahwahnee, Happy Isles, etc., and (b) in the western end of the valley out to Bridalveil falls (less frequeby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Haven't been to YNP since the corona thing started, used to be you could park at any of the day-use lots and take the shuttle to Happy Isles, then walk over the bridge to the trailhead. But I understand there are no shuttles this year. You might need to park at Curry and walk to Happy Isles.by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. IMHO, a much better day hike if only have one day to visit. mark At Tioga entrance you start at 10K elevation and at Elizabeth Lake TH you start at 8600, don't know if that makes a difference for most people. As I said, I've been disappointed with Aramark and the things you mention are among the reasons why. But keeping the slopes at Badger Pass closed during the winter - I doubt that was Aramark's call or preferred outcome. I think killing the TM shuttle was short-sighted (and not updating the web site to reflect the cancellation was reprehensible), but it was understandable: some bean-counter at Aby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
