IIRC, the closest lot to the Elizabeth Lake trailhead is in horse campsite loop in the TM campground, and it's unlikely they'll let you in without a TM campground reservation (but of course it never hurts to ask). So you'll likely need to park at the TM Visitors' Center as you've proposed and walk along the JMT (or along the road to the campground entrance), or in the lot by the platform tents dby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebalzaccom I wonder how many other people will try this before someone dies and the park service prohibits further attempts... Takes a lot of effort to get to the top of HD in the snow, including some facility with climbing on ice. Ok, I'll bite: I don't think I've seen "Altusky Peak" on any map. Where is it? Is this one of these peaks that on the USGS topo maps is only labeled with the elevation? Or maybe it's the peak just to the south of Unicorn Peak (based on the duo's report of January 24, 2018)?by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Nice, thanks for sharing. I especially like the sunset photos at 4:19 and 4:45. And as usual, I'm envious. Quotembazeley My tent lines are already reflective thanks to REI. So I camped for a night in Lyell Canyon a few weeks ago on my way to Vogelsang, I woke up in the morning to find that a fellow backpacker had stashed his bear canister well away from his tent (good), but 10 feet away from mine (bad!). And it wasn't nighttime or anything. It was obvious to him that my campsite was there. Still wby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

What Balzaccom said, although instead of going down into the valley, on your last day you could go from LYV back to GP along the panorama trail. That way you could also be a little more leisurely on the other days, or use the time to explore a bit. I think Shaffer in his book suggests doing this loop in the opposite direction: from GP along panorama to LYV, then up the Merced River canyon,by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotemkbgdns well, using that logic, we should appreciate that he's offering unemployed people a $200 weekly supplement to their unemployment benefits. the money's he's signed off on is theatre to repair his damaged image, not a serious attempt to provide NPS with $ it needs to "fix" its infrastructure needs. I think the most recent edition is from 2006. It's been republished since then (I think I bought mine in 2013 or so) but I don't think it's been updated. Love it, thanks for the TR. As usual, I'm envious. From your description, and the great views of Mt. There are actually two ways to get there via trail, one via the trail to Dog Lake (either leaving from the Lembert Dome parking lot, or leaving from the "Tuolumne Lodge" parking lot and heading up over Tioga Road, then crossing north of Lembert Dome toward Dog Lake), the other leaving from the Lembert Dome parking lot and initially briefly heading in the direction of Glen Aulin. If you want to go specifically to a lake, there's a nice beach at the east end of Tenaya Lake, you can park close. If you want to hike some, Dog Lake in the Tuolumne Meadows area.
