Will only have 2 vehicles total (my parents & sisters family will also have vehicles but they are staying at Curry). It would be 3 tents (fairly large ones) but the site is very big. I thought about just doing it but if the rangers say anything its a long way back to Oregon for my unhappy friends...LOL

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Looking to see if anyone has space for 2 grownups (1 tent, their vehicle will stay in my site) for the above dates (or know of anyone who does)? It will only be for sleeping purposes. I currently have a site with 4 of us already and need to accommodate another 4 (which by rules I can only add 2). If anyone is willing to help out it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Half Dome doesn't have one because it was too hard to get on the top of in 1905 (when the one on Clouds Rest was monumented). Back in the day these "triangulation stations" were sighted from numerous other stations and had many horizontal angles turned between them to establish their horizontal location. A lot of prominent peaks have them but they needed to be accessible and needed to

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion By the last NGS "data sheet" report (2006) both of the "reference monuments" (RM1 & RM2) were still intact as was the "triangulation station" (not a "benchmark" but they mentioned the main station appeared to be aluminum (rather than brass or copper) and that the stamping was obliterated. It was originally monumented in 1905.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion You'd be surprised at how many "benchmarks" are set in vertical features (bridge abutments, rock ledges, etc.). Quite of few of the monuments that are pictured in this thread aren't really "benchmarks" but are "triangulation" stations (horizontal coordinates only, not vertical).

Which Merrell's do you own?
My feet are similar to yours, wide (4E) with narrow heels and the Merrell's Mens Moab Gore-Tex Wide-Width hiking shoes fit my feet like a glove. They're actually comfortable enough for everyday use if I ever needed to wear them around town.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion A trail runner would be fine, just going to do quite a bit of hiking but no backpacking and I would prefer low tops. I just can't take the Merrell's I have anymore because I have worn a hole in the back of the heel from all the slippage. I still have my old semi-crappy, although very comfortable feeling, Hi-Tec "mid" hikers that are 15 years old.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thanks for the reply...I also have the high instep & arches...never heard of a heel cup but I suppose REI might sell those too. The part about buying 2 pairs is exactly what I do with tennis shoes (new balance only because of the width) since when you find a good pair they tend to not stay around next season.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I can never get boots to fit properly. I have wide feet (4E) and narrow heels. Just curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to get a better fit. Would it be better to have a better fit in the toe box & a little loose in the heels or a better fit in the heels and a tight toe box. Thank for any input.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Chick-on....it appears to me that your photo#8 is very, very close to your photo#3. If you look at the striations and cuts in the rock they appear almost the same. The older photo was obviously taken from above where you took yours, but I'd say you might have a match there. The old photo looks like there might've been more surface on the top of the right side of the rock, but with different ligh

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Does anybody have any maps (maybe chick-on?) that would show roads like the old/new Wawona on the same quad sheet or something similar? Maybe even just the old or new 'hand drawn" onto the older/newer version of the road. I would love to see something "semi' official that shows both at the same time...its just a curiosity thing for me.
Thanks

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'm going to be traveling from Reno (bowling tournament) to Oakhurst on 6/15, then into Wawona for a week. Knowing that Tioga won't be open yet, which Highway would be the more scenic, CA-88 or CA-4? Haven't been either way before so if anyone has an opinion please weigh in.
Thanks

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Closest name resemblance I found was an "empire meadow" due south of Bridalveil Creek campground. The shot looks to me to have the Royal Arches & North Dome in it, with Half Dome obscured by the leaves. "Emperor" might be a made up name in this case.
