Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Update- we decided to do ten lakes. June 30- July 3. I was able to complete the hike I had planned for last year (w/chick-on) but got cancelled due to the 2018 fires. It was awesome. We did not seem anyone for first two days. Camped at da lake below grand which was not frozen. Grand was grandiose. The first lake was thawed also. The other lakes should all be thawed soon.
Lower grant was fully

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thanks for the update. U da bomb. Clockwise or counterclockwise to Vernon? We were thinking counterclockwise but if you go the other way you should be able to make to Vernon the first day or Lauren if we're gassed. I was hoping to spend 2 days at Vernon. Did you make it up to Branigan?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The scenery at upper cathedral lake is hard to top. Might want to camp there. If too crowded at upper, hike on trail, through the upper meadow to the next ridge. Killer views up there too. Best views in yosemite don't race through there. The second day shoot for sunrise lakes or sunrise HS camp area depending on you progress. It's a long push to clouds rest but that is also one of the best views

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Nice photo. It looks like it's taken from pretty high up? I can't figure out where it's taken from. Buta my Clark "basin" would be starting point of the Clark ford or the awesome bowl below the NW arete. No obelisk. I figured we'd be lucky to make it to Clark "basin"... My hiking party didn't like my off trail plans. I have a flight booked so I'm committed to the June 30 hik

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra So Last August I didn't get to hike mono meadows/10425 due to fires. We opted to go earlier this year hoping to avoid the fires, but then the snow came. Our current permit is June 30 for glen aulin pass though. If the road from west side isn't open to Tuolumne on June 30, a backup plan would be mono meadows to Mt star king meadow then towards Mt Clark canyon then down Clark canyon to Merced. Any

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Okay - it's there. June must be too early in the year for that elevation. I've been backpacking in late July early August for five years. I need to adjust for a end of June hike this year. We're hoping to avoid the fire season.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra NPS update from wilderness permit application-
We're reaching out to you in regards to your recent permit application to hike the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. Before issuing a permit for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, we want to make sure that hikers are aware that the Pate Valley bridge is currently heavily damaged from flooding in 2017. From our last report, there is only one intac

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Pate valley is the bridge of concern. NPS said it's scheduled for repairs this year but it most likely won't be repaired until after July. There is also a YouTube video of the bridge condition from a couple years ago. Obviously it's gotten worse since the video. Anyone been across or by that bridge last year? A lot will depend on the snow yet to fall and the melt off. Just curious how people have

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Have a group of 4 planning a trip down from TM GA pass through to white wolf. June 30.
Just wondering if any of the three(of four)bridges are up? Any thoughts on difficultly of river crossings at end of June . I'm worried, thinking we may need security ropes or something.
Have a pretty experienced river guy coming along but know that river crossings that early can be deadly. Anyone been down or

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thank you for the replies. I have been planning the trip for a long time so it's hard to just let it go. I was kinda in denial but based on the comments I think a plan B is in order.
It's a week before my hike in date so I've got some time to hope and develope a new plan. Thanks again.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I am coming from the Midwest so I may have to cancel the trip to ten lakes and go somewhere else. I was hoping to get some input from anyone who may have been in ten lakes area recently?
I cancelled my canvas tent reservation at white wolf today. They are too expense and it had to be cancelled today to get a refund. If the smoke clears we will just use the backpackers camp at WW and if not we're

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Just wondering if anyone has been near ten lakes and can give a report on the air quality or wind direction there. My permit is for Aug 6 so I'm hoping it will be better then.
I've never been there so I'm not sure what to expect in the basin.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thanks for all the tips. Freeze dried doesn't compare to tri-tip and barrel chicken but you can't take that in the backcountry...unless you're a bears fan. Go Pack
I was expecting REI to have 20% off MH at the anniversary sale. 😲 I'll go with MH.com or amazon for most but I'm looking for meals for back to back 4 day hikes so-

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'm looking for recommendations for dehydrated meals. My favorites are mountain house beef stroganoff, Italian pepper steak, sweet and sour pork. REI's anniversary sale doesn't have HM on sale so I'm looking for recommendations on the other vendors dehydrated meals.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Any recommendations for a camping spot below echo valley and how far up from LYV are you required to go before you can camp? I will be hiking down the Merced and about 13 miles from LVY with the majority of it off trail. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it all the way to LYV so I'm looking for suggestions for stopping short! It will be my last night and I'm hiking out to glacier point or the

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thank you all for the expert advise. I have about four months to work on my plan. My permit is for Aug 12 at MM TH and exiting on the 16th. 5 days 4 nights. I did extend my trip and added another day to make 10425. Depending on my condition upon arrival at 10425 I may revise the trip and day hike from here. That's what I love about YNP. There are so many options. That said I am definitely having

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Kinda worked. I was hoping the lines I drew would show. Rookie mistake. Looks like I should be able to make it up there to the lake above obelisk from grey creek at 9200. I'm guessing that's the route you took down. Hopefully I can avoid them big rocks in there

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I'm not sure what the hiking categories are? I'm not at the super chick-on level. No disrespect. I research the hikes during the winter months and always find your posts.
Never carried a rope but might have needed it once or twice. Some of my adventures-cathedral to sunrise camp...yes the first year I went I was one of those HSC folks. I picked up cancellations and strung together two nights a

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thanks "chick-on". I enjoy reading your posts. I have been taking annual backpacking trips to Yosemite for six years in a row with most trips 4 or 5 nights. I lived in LA area for about 10 years but now I'm in the mid west. This year I am leading a few friends on a trip to ten lakes. 2 nights at ten lakes and two at grant. I've seen your posts and hope to checkout grand mtn and a cou

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I started with a SLR, moved to a compact digital, and then upgraded to a Canon DSLR. The last two years I questioned bringing the DSLR but a have brought it each time. My biggest problem with the DLSR is I keep it over my neck for quick use but can't seem to find a case or strapping system to keep it accessible but not bouncing. It also serves a backup if my phone were to fail. I think eventually
