General Discussion A wise person once said to me, "Only the boring are bored."
If you need to be spoon-fed your entertainment, stay with Vegas or Reno. The rest of Nevada isn't for you.
Anywhere outside of the metro areas will provide you with clear night skies. I also would recommend visiting some of the numerous ghost towns like Rhyolite (not far from Vegas/Pahrump/Death Valley), Aurora (just a fe

General Discussion Have you seen telltale parallel scratches on an erratic? I don't remember any but there's this TV show on showing exactly that, I'm thinking the boulder he's showing is not really an erratic

General Discussion The thing about the plowing is this. It doesn't really matter. Every year we go through this, how deep is the snow. How many fallen trees. When does the road open. Round and round we go.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The space shuttle and other 'nauts pack out their trash from orbit. Why is that? Why not just launch the waste products into the atmosphere? I'm pretty sure it would never make it closer than maybe 50 miles above ground before being completely incinerated

General Discussion This ran in the paper as a "did you know," I switched it around into a quiz. It's pretty easy.
1. Name the average surface temperature of Lake Tahoe for March and for August.
2. Name the driveable (paved) passes over the Sierra. (Does Tehachapi count?)
3. What year did the grizzly bear disappear from the Sierra?
4. How many lakes in the Sierra 20 feet across or larger?
5.

General Discussion You can move this to one of the other threads but I figured it should be up top. LA Times clip:
Half Dome hiking permits sell like hot cakes
Warning, weekend hikers: If you’re planning an assault on Half Dome in May or June, your time has just about run out.
In their first 48 hours of peddling hiker permits, under a new system designed to relieve weekend and holiday crowding on

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Looks like we have a mild El Nino with waves of snow. I've noticed the snow here in Reno (more predicted tonight) are very, very light and melt quickly. I wouldn't plan on Tioga opening anywhere near June 1 the way things are going. Come back in 3 months to see if I'm right...I'd say later June perhaps into July. Just in time for some repaving LOL

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quotequmqats
Only needed for Fri, Sat, Sun, Holiday ascents to the summit of Half Dome.
Wonderful video, re-enforces my desire to do HD again next summer, its been quite a while. I wonder what the #'s of climbers will be for the year. The controversy over the permit system could well spark an increase.
To tell you the truth, I think you may be correct. Plan your vacation ahead of time.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quotemrcondron
Vince,
If things were only that simple. We live in an extraordinarily narrow window that supports our form of life. We need protection from the elements outside of a temperature band of only a few degrees. Our bodies are very intolerant to even minor variations in our environment. Parts per million can kill us while parts per billion degrade us.
You have no evidence of this

General Discussion Yet we're talking an increase from .00038 to .00043 as ending the world? Now, c'mon, do you see anything at all approaching the drowsy 1 percent? Anywhere?
