Since I day hike that trail, I confess I have not much paid attention.
Most of the obvious sites are of course right next to the creek... and if you get off the trail a bit either direction you find fire rings in illegal places, as usual.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra One evening my dad was driving me home (I was ten or eleven) and we were coming down a hill starting into a corner when a doe jumped in front of us. We stopped and the doe ran straight at the car, rammed the headlight, wobbled away into the brush and jumped a fence. The headlight pointed away to the side for years after that.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Got a map? Check out the trailheads from Tioga Road and make your plan.
Young Lakes, Ten Lakes, Mono or Parker Pass, any of 'em will be good.
Don't forget your bear can and to leave your itinerary with someone - use reconn.org if you don't want to work too hard.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Try inconvenienced for an HOUR. A whole hour behind schedule.
If you want to argue that side of things, go ahead - but there are far less patient people than me out there and I am smart enough to be afraid of them.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion They can't. I never buy Goretex. Once the bootie in the shoe starts to leak you have the worst of both worlds - water comes in, doesn't dry out.
A breathable shoe plus some light breathable gaiters to keep your feet clean spells comfort.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I would get out the map and plan alternates, if I were you. There are all kinds of options. Having them ready to shoot out - "what about Young Lakes? What about Mono/parker pass? What about Cathedral Lakes? What about Sunset trailhead toward Clouds Rest or Vogelsang? What about Glen Aulin passthrough instead of Glen Aulin?" in order of your preference is a good idea. In fact, you will w

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Since there are so many people so far this year needing assistance!!!
1. Drive the speed limit. Don't speed. Animals like to cross the road once in a while, as do horses with passengers, hikers, and the occasional ranger.
2. Drive the speed limit. Don't slowpoke. If you must slow poke, because the rental RV is unfamiliar or the baby's sleeping or you're just nervous about the road, USE PULL

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I would guess that the snow will be mostly gone by then, unless more storms come. There will probably be mosquitos.
I never go out without 20F sleeping gear and enough layers to get me 10 degrees below that. Anything warmer runs the risk of getting you cold... it can snow any time the mountains think you need the challenge.
You can try for permits the day before, and if not successful try

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra That's true, and why I turned the hiking group around when we reached a creek that was nearly impassable - four hours later when we were supposed to come back, it would have been totally impassable, stranding us for an unplanned overnight.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra SAR has been talking about that for the past five years, but to my knowledge our local team hasn't raised the funds to get one yet. Yose being federal, the paperwork is likely taking a decade.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I would imagine they are still talking about closing the valley floor to vehicles and shuttling everyone in? They talked about that a number of times before.
There's going to be hundreds of geeks violating the rule, of course, because "my little drone won't bother anyone or anything, they're so mean" - and then we'll start seeing webcam shots of clouds of the things around Half Dome.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It'll have snow and standing water from melting snow. Just because the pass is open doesn't mean all the snow is gone. It's melting fast, but there was a few feet on the pass when it opened. Traditionally there is a segment of trail that can be in knee deep water during the melt. Rivers and streams are high, and will be til the melt's done - don't hesitate to turn around if it's too dangerous.

Its mostly downhill, so Im not worried about the physical stuff.
Many people think downhill is easy. That depends - by the end of many of the Yosemite downhill bits, various people in my hiking group find that they prefer uphill. Between the toe bang and the knee damage, it can be painful - add a heavy pack and it'll double.
The "backpacking stuff" should be

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra A friend with similar dimensions finds relief with New Balance. Trekstas are also differently proportioned than most of the run of the mill shoes out there.
You may have to find an orthopedics place and get a custom insole to find a total solution that won't malform your foot. As someone who dissed that notion and regretted it, I'll throw it out there and encourage it - no one deserves the pa

Currently, the predicted peak water flow is in mid May this year. It is supposed to rain and snow this week and who knows if any more or a larger storm will come in the next few weeks that will affect that prediction. Even if there are no more storms, it is not going to be dry on the Mist Trail by the first week of June and remember the wind does blow water onto the trail.
