Last September I booked 5 nights at White Wolf and paid the usual one-night deposit. Since White Wolf will not open this year, does anybody know when they'll issue refunds? I emailed the reservation line a couple of days ago but haven't gotten a response yet (I have no idea if anybody's even checking the email). I haven't bothered trying to call (going on the assumption that wait times would b

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion VERY sorry to hear that but, if I'm reading your post correctly, at least it sounds like it's not permanent (I'm very much about trying to see the bright side of things these days). Assuming the "left ear" (presumably inner ear) diagnosis is accurate, is there any kind of treatment or is it one of those things that just has to heal?
Sending healing thoughts and best wishes your way

General Discussion Thank you so much for these postings. This is a part of the park that I will probably never get to see in the off-season and I always look forward to these pictures during the winter.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion A few folks have been updating this old post about chick-on's birthday. I'm a day late but thought we should have a new thread for this year's event...especially since he's probably feeling the pain of the shutdown more than most of us!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion This probably deserves to have a brand new thread started but since other folks are chiming in here, I'll add my birthday wishes to The Great Pink One!
Hope you're finding a way to stay immersed in Yosemite even when it's closed. Be safe and stay sane (well, as close to sane as you've ever been!)

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion A big "ditto!" from me...I SO look forward to reading these reports. I've got 5 nights booked at White Wolf in July and really hoping things will be settled down enough by then for us to travel again.

Then there is the Yosemite Conservancy that bought land in and adjacent to Yosemite West. Again, without the prior knowledge of property owners, someone that is a consultant for the Yosemite Conservancy is lobbying for Mariposa County to change the zoning so high density housing could be built in what is now zoned rural. This would allow the Conservancy to built large housing uni

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Cool! Where was this taken? The terrain (as much as can be seen) looks like it could be Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque but I was there fairly recently and don't recall seeing any panels quite this densely covered.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Terrific report and it looks like a fantastic trip. The pictures ranged from very good to stunning. Sounds like some of your adventures were a bit too...well..."adventurous" for me but otherwise I'd love to check this area out one of these days!
Thanks for taking the time to write this up!

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Sorry I'm a day late but Happy Birthday to one of my favorite people-I've-yet-to-meet! Reading about your exploits with Basilbop and the Pink One are one of my favorite things about this board. Continued good luck with the healing and wishing you all the best out there in the wilderness!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion From the article:
From 2005 to 2009, there were 85 SAR incidents, 134 victims, eight fatalities, and 38 major incidents.
After the permits were required, from 2011 to 2015, the same area saw 54 SAR incidents, 156 victims, four fatalities, and 35 major incidents.
Statistically speaking, especially when considering incidents fell in the park overall during the same time period, that's no di

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Wow...since 1933, there have only been 4 other July openings...the last one more than 20 years ago (Jul 1 in 1998 and 1936, Jul 5 in 1938 and Jul 8 in 1933)!
Details here
Bear in mind, moreover, that the middle section of the road was not re-aligned until 1961 so in the stretch just west of Tenaya Lake, the old road still went up to Snow Flat (one proposed re-routing of this stretch was sup

Tioga Road to open 6/21/19
from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. No parking will be allowed on Tioga Road and day use recreation is not permitted.
Hmmm...I don't remember the exact distance from the Tioga Pass entrance to Crane Flat but IIRC it's about 46 miles and the speed limit ranges between 25 & 45 MPH so, doing the speed limit, that's about 1:15 to get

I wouldn't recommend Chilnualna Falls as a good starter hike. That is a steep hard trail without a backpack. With a backpack, you'd be suffering.
I'm actually a bit surprised to hear that...when I first started going to Yosemite 20 years ago, this was one of the first "outside-the-valley" hikes I ever did and I was impressed at what a relaxed climb it was. Granted

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Hi Ruth,
Since posting this last year, I've picked up a Canon SX730 P&S (I rather like this but I still miss some of the features of my Lumix...not least of all that the Canon does not have GPS) and a Canon EOS Rebel DSLR. I usually don't do much processing of my pictures other than the occasional crop or color tweak so I haven't invested in Photoshop although I expect I will if I ever

General Discussion I've been going to Yose for about 20 years but, since I live in NJ, typically only get out there once a year. We started going to the park at a time in our lives when hiking at elevation was quite new to us and, on those first 2 or 3 trips struggled to do a 3-5 mile day hike. We pretty much always did at least one hike that included the Mist trail in the first dozen or so visits (going a little

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Although my wife & I live close to sea level, I've always been fortunate in that I acclimate to altitude fairly quickly. My wife is not so fortunate. We'll be heading to Rocky Mountain NP next week and starting our stay on the (much higher) west side (we'll be staying in Grand Lake which is a little below 8500') with pretty much all hikes being up from there. We've done this before (starti

General Discussion I'm more of a day-hiker than a backpacker so you'll want to get other folks' opinion on this but the Mist Trail below Vernal Falls is very wet (aka "slippery" ) and, at the time you're going, will most likely be VERY crowded...It's a little further to take the JMT down to the bridge below Vernal but it'll be less crowded and provide you with better footing. And, BTW, the fact that most
