I'm so sorry for not reporting on this final trip.
My family and I took this amazing trip in March. I suppose I would say I didn't do much "hiking" per say but it truly was an amazing trip...

General Discussion Ah the age old firearms/bears debate.
I probably asked 25 people if on extended hikes they carried a firearm or bear spray. The answers were about split.
I landed squarely on bear spray and I'm an hunter. The studies just don't support the other position on long hikes. Now if a person is car camping I don't mind having a gun around. But I'd prefer a nice shotgun. But the fact of the ma

General Discussion Happy Birthday!
I still remember the closest I ever came to seeing Chick-On. We were on our way UP airplane gully after an aborted Tenaya Canyon daytrip trek that brought us down, using ropes, Pywiack Cascades. A lone person passed us heading down and I said, "Are you Chick-On?" For you had said you were doing the Canyon the next day. Alas it wasn't you---and least the person who

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Based on these result do I conclude correctly that we still had a below average snowfall? Albeit much better than the last couple years...
But what will this generally speaking mean for the waterfalls the week of August 14? I've got a quick family trip and want to make sure I give everyone the right expectations. They have heard how great the snow is this year but I'm not so sure it has bee

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quoteeeek
QuoteK2Federal Government needs to pony up whatever it takes to buy these names or tell these corporations where to go flat out.
The problem is DNC putting valuations on the trade marks that far exceeds their real value. It's probably just a ploy to up the amount they receive from their replacement.
After the uproar yesterday I've continued to think about this. And I keep on going

It seems to me that the Park Service shares some blame with this entire issue. It seems ridiculous but it also would seem as though it should be a settled matter of the contract or trademark law. What I can't tell from the story is whether they intend on the name changes being temporary---or even if the announcement is a negotiating ploy to get DNC to settle.

If they try to change or tamper with Curry Pizza Deck I'm considering a hostile takeover like the Oregon situation. Anyone care to join me?

Thankfully there have been no plans to change anything about the Curry Pizza Deck!
Don't be so sure, we haven't heard yet how many millions of $ DNC wants from the new concessionaire for the pizza recipe!
If that priceless recipe really is DNC's, then I might have to switch sides to DNC!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Ha! Trademark "Space Shuttle Atlantis"...
And some thought this old post was silly:
Since DNC had trademarked many of the historic Yosemite Names, several name changes will also occur:
Ahwahnee Hotel will become White Wolf Lodge
Half Dome will become Dome of the Rock
Vernal Fall will become Ernest Fall
Nevada Fall will become California Fall
Yosemite Falls will be

General Discussion My 16 and 17 year old sons still insist on completing the program when we visit a new National Park or many other monuments, etc (places like Alcatraz, fort in Puerto Rico, etc have the same program). Their collection of badges is awesome.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It is the silt in the water that causes the color change and sometimes called glacier milk. (really rough on water filters by the way) So even if the classification had changed to a "snowfield" from a glacier it would still contain the silt that causes the water color change.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Oh yes. That stuff. I guess I knew that existed on the Yosemite Falls hike. I think Chick-On forgot what an actual trail looks like.
Isn't there a bunch of that below Nevada Falls also?

General Discussion Here is the latest example of a "defensive" attack by a brown bear (grizzly) in Alaska. In this case the bear was shot by the hunters and found dead later.

General Discussion Here is Alaska's most recent example of a brown bear (grizzly) attack where it was determined that the attack was not predatory thus they are not killing the bear.

General Discussion I'm skeptical that this is a workable or even worthwhile solution. The article notes that the successful "Rehab" Center only releases bears where "natural staples are abundant" and in "remote places where they likely won't see a person for a while". This eliminates anywhere in the Lower 48 and I don't think Alaska works either.
