Thanks. It took a couple of hours to figure it out.
But I wanted to thank whichever of you posted the difference between LeConte and Waterwheels. I remembered that LeConte had the island with a tree in the middle. I was able to use that information to tell other hikers that they were not at Waterwheel Falls yet, they were at LeConte. Waterwheel is only about another half mile down.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Bear with me. This is my first attempt at posting photos.
Started out from Tioga Road and in an hour or so, this marmot was signaling to the others that I was approaching May Lake.
Set up the tent with a great view of the lake.
Since I was hiking solo and not being the anti-social type, I ate my meals in the High Sierra Camps. That night at May Lake was pasta night. (The fol

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I agree with all of the above. So I tried to upload photos to Picasa. Instead of just uploading the file from my last trip it started uploadiing all my photos, which upset me, especially after I read the thread from last year that somehow that had deleted some people's photos from My Pictures. I read the thread on posting photos from Facebook. I don't want to do that to protect my privacy.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion What I meant was "Is there anyone on this board who hasn't been there?"
I didn't go off trail. I didn't scout old roads. I didn't look for long, lost, no longer used trails or old campsites from the 1930's.
Maybe, I was wrong. But a trip report on a heavily used trail just didn't seem to be in the same league as the rest of you.
The only 'new' information to report is th

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Wow. I didn't know it was a faux paus not to post trip reports and photos, but just to ask advice. I went to May Lake, Glen Aulin and Waterwheel Falls but I thought everyone has been there, it's nothing remarkable, so I shouldn't post.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Yes, I have two books and have looked up lots of Youtube hikers videos of this section of the JMT and other web resources. Just thought I could get some different thoughts from those of you who have done this stretch.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Mid August, a group of 4 of us will be heading up the Shadow Creek Trail from Agnew Meadows. I was thinking that we could get to Garnet lake the first night? Or is this too ambitious? My group and I are not the well-muscled backpacking experts many of you are and while the 7 or 8 miles wouldn't be too bad with a day pack, I'm just not sure given that it will be doable. There's about a 1700 fo

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I got back Saturday from a roundtrip hike - Tuolumne Meadows - May Lake - Glen Aulin - Waterwheel Falls - Tuolumne Meadows.
The mosquitos were only a problem on the forested part of the trail between May Lake and Glen Aulin, roughly the last four miles.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Yes, I know space can be limited, but I have only a few lunch/snack items and a small bag of sunscreen and toothpaste. So I should be able to cram that into the bear box. I'm buying other meals at the High Sierra Camps (which may entitle me to use their bear boxes)

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I stayed in Yosemite Lodge this winter and the WiFi is free for guests and worked great. Daughter was able to post photos immediately and keep in touch with friends.
As for as cell phone: I had a pretty good Verizon connection in the parking lot of Tuolumne Lodge. Don't know about any other area since I leave the cell phone behind on hikes.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'll be in the backpacking camp at May Lake and Glen Aulin. I think I'll just leave the bear can at home and use the bearboxes there. Seems like that's a better way to make sure my food doesn't go rolling away down the river or off the cliff.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Actually, I'd charge people, like me, who come up to Yosemite on the uncrowded east side, a lot less than those of you who cause giant traffic jams at the west side entrances.

General Discussion I'm with you on this. Europe has a system like this. Those holding EU passports get free or cheaper entrance fees to musuems, than those not holding an EU passport.
Hard to implement here where few people carry passports, though.

General Discussion I disagree about the scenery from May Lake to Glen Aulin. There is a field of lupine less than a mile from May Lake. There's a section of rocky switchbacks that had water seeping out of various cracks in the rocks creating lovely little wildflower rock gardens. There are good views back to Tenaya Lake. And it's downhill from May Lake to Glen Aulin. Of course, only you can judge your child's

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Doing a section of the JMT in mid-August. I'm hoping that the meadows will still be green but the skeeters will be gone. Starting at Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows, four days, three nights. First backpacking trip in many years and I'm doing several local hikes every week to train. I may do an overnight up to Young Lakes as a shake down cruise and do a day hike to Shadow Lake to scout out t

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion As a Mom of 20 year olds, my take is that you can and should certainly encourage a love of nature. But you can't force it. My two kids have been taken to almost every national park in the west, including Alaska. We have hiked and seen all sorts of wildlife. We live near some pretty good places to hike on day trips. I took the kids to the High Sierra Camps with their cousins, similar ages, wi

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Come to think of it, the High Sierra Camps aren't always great for a good night's sleep either. Last summer, one woman in my tent got up every hour to go to the bathroom while another one got up every hour (but not the same hour) to put more wood in the stove. We could have grown orchids in the tent; it was like a hothouse. No blankets needed even with the outside temps in the 40's.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion If you can't get into the Yosemite Lodge, I'd recommend Yosemite View Lodge. It's about $200 per night roughly equivalent to the Lodge at the Falls in the park. They have nice kitchenettes and some rooms have a balcony overlooking the Merced.
As for the High Sierra Camps, they can get set up quickly after the snow melts. The mosquitos may be bad, especially at Vogelsang. I'd recommend h

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I canceled the River Trail reservation and booked the Shadow Creek trail. The spur trail off the River Trail to Garnet looked easy to miss. And I wanted to see Garnet and now I have the option of going to Ediza.
So I hope I am all set now. For a new user the recreation.gov system can be a bit confusing. I originally had us down for a 'cross-country" trip thinking that meant a differ
