What a lovely weekend with you two and A & E! Double birthday celebrations!!
Sad PSA: our friends, A & E, we’re driving up early Friday morning from Santa Cruz to meet us in Yosemite so we could all day hike together before checking in. Well, while we were eating breakfast on Iakdale, I got a call from A, and she said how her car had been broken into at Starbucks in Los Banos. (West

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Iirc that spot correctly.. we had had smooth sailing XC for some distance. And a LOT of it down steeply. Then we had to get to the other side of the lake to pick up trail for Trail Quest.. so as much as I wanted to, going back wasn’t a great option. And I could see where we had just been which would have led to a shrub free route around the lake, but lots of talus... and my foot was still quite

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Wow! Thanks again for the amazing trips with you, Chick-on, and these great pics reminding me of them!
That snow one with us peeking out... that was the crazy hail storm weekend, wasn't it? Wowza!
Also.. it does strike me that I'm a good bit shorter than I feel! Hm... maybe i have Small Bird syndrome... not fully aware of my size... Oh well, better than feeling like an Old Birdie!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I want to thank Chick-on for his amazing birthday posts for Basilbop! I can't wait to see each new headline! Woo hoo!
Basilbop.. I want to thank you for all these wonderful years together and especially for the times we have spent in our beloved Sierra. To me, there is nothing better than sharing our love for the mountains with each other and our friends! I wish us all many more years out ther

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion lschaaf,
Yah, with my injuries and Basilbop's schedule, Chick-on will have to do a lot of stuff twice or more.. such a hardship! It's gorgeous country and I, for one, will benefit from his "recon" trips... where he's figured out where good camping is, so we can plan around my limits accordingly. He and Basilbop have been utterly fabulous and I've been able to have a truly enjoyable

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra No..
Chick-on and mrcondron saved a chunk of trail that I had not done, but sadly, Basilbop had already done years ago, so we couldn’t all four finish at the same time, no matter what. So we agreed the three of us would finish together, which we did in late 2016, iirc. I think on Basilbop’s birthday? Scheduling being what it was, that was the date we could get us all, including Chick-on

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Sorry about the delay in responding, but it's been super busy here, especially with trying to catch up from the August trip!
BUT we managed to get days so that Basilbop could finish his Yosemite Trail Quest and huge kudos to him and thanks to Chick-On for the inspiration and encouragement to do it!
Finishing at Isberg Pass was wonderful, and though the wind was chilly, the conditions were

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The latest model REI Quarter Dome 3 weighs 4 pounds 1 ounce, which isn’t bad really for that much space and protection. And conveniences...pockets, easy to mount the tablet for overhead video for “TV time”... and bug, wind, rain and snow protection..
Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 3 weighs 3 lb 7 ounces and costs a good bit more.. and with the amount of use these tents get from us... the RE

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion A very belated Thank you to all for your birthday wishes!
Chick-on, Basilbop and I have been having a lot of fun, and I’m getting back up into 8 mile days back to back. Some 10 Miles. Getting better. Not normal yet, but I’m out and having fun, and that is the important thing for me. I want to thank the guys for their tremendous support in helping me get out there! They have been hauling ex

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I used a poncho a few times, but enough “light” forecast storms had winds strong enough to beat me up with flapping bits of material, poor coverage and tedious. A light plastic poncho was shredded during one hike locally (Friend was wearing) won’t do myself.
Loved my O2 rainwear jacket, like Frog Toggs, but lighter. Frog Toggs are great, if a bit bulky.
But now umbrella, OR Helium I

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra You could use the REI 20% off coupon on non sale items and buy a kit of MH.
Keep an eye on Costco, too, if you are a member. There have been some very good deals on kits rotating through.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quote from article:
“The male hiker was on the Half Dome cables hiking with another person during thunder storm activity. ”
IMO, they should not have been on the cables. I’ve turned around several times approaching Whitney when the t-storms started up. And that took a heck of a lot more effort to get that far (trail crest-ish usually). Figured better safe than sorry. Always want to c

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion QuoteKevinD
Was always curious about it but the group always wanted to go Schats
We hesitated and kept going to “usual” haunts (none great) but finally tried based on Yelp reviews last year. (Take them for what they are worth, but it gave us a guideline of how to branch out.)
Sorry. Did Aaron Schat’s Roadhouse ribs. No comparison.
U want bbq, try Holy Smoke, then we talk about how

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Okay.. I’ve loved the Eastern Sierra for ages.. but dang. That bbq! We learned last summer not to hike out on a Tuesday.
We had just eaten there for the first time before a week long trip, couldn’t stop thinking about it, and then went there and were sorely disappointed finding it closed. Tried ribs at another place in town, disappointed. Hadn’t noticed they were closed on Tuesdays! Al
