I stayed at Aspen Campground off 120 recently, had a nice campsite along the creek. Most of the sites are large. It's just above Lee Vining. Also the campground at Saddlebag Lake is good for hiking, it's first come first serve, so there is a certain amount of luck involved.
Lake Alpine is nice also, especially if you ride a bike- mountain or road bike.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I like to use the permit office at the Highway 120 entrance station the day before my hike when possible. The lines are shorter, and since the system is computerized, your chance of getting a permit is the same as up at Tuolumne Meadow.
Also, with a shorter line, the rangers are usually less stressed. I usually recite the rules, and tell them I'm not going to make any wood fires. With that I ha

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra In my experience it is the inexperience hiker who think they will have the JMT to themselves in July. There are so many almost empty areas in the Sierra if you just stay away from the JMT/PCT in July and August. In high season the JMT is a walking party. All the people there are there for the same reason, because they love hiking in the mountains. The grump was just in the wrong place. Maybe his

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I have permit reservations this weekend to hike from Mono Meadows up the Buena Vista Trail to Buena Vista Lake- Royal Arches Lake- Johnson Lake- etc, and come back via the Bridalveil Creek Trail, coming out on Glacier Point Road about a mile west of the Mono Meadows Trailhead. Four nights, Friday thru Tuesday.
My concern is smoke from the Oakhurst fire. Do the experienced ones on this forum th

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thank you for continuing to post the story of your hike. I look forward to day 7, 8 , & 9. I suspect the weather gets better. I believe I got hailed on coming down Lyell Canyon July 20, then the weather changed.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra QuoteNoah Greenwald of the Center for Biological Diversity, which petitioned federal officials to reintroduce the grizzly, said his organization sees the southern Sierra as the best choice in California. His group envisions releasing 300 to 400 bears in the region, a tract of public land with overlapping parks and wilderness areas
That would make the JMT interesting!
Seriously, this will not

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'm really enjoying following along. I was over at Alger Lakes for this storm. Lightening, thunder, hours of rain. But it gave me a good excuse to relax.
I anxiously await Day 3,4 &5

Excellent! I am always impressed by the T-storm stories and pictures, and as I sit at a computer I wish I was up in my tent enjoying them. But I recall the thrill can wear off after too many days in a row of them. And you certainly seemed to have been caught in the middle of them!
Honestly, it wasn't that bad. It gave me an excuse to knock off mid-afternoon and lay in the tent a

Wow, a different year- a whole lot more snow. I may complain about the thunderstorms, but at least the lakes weren't frozen.
Thanks for the pictures

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra On July 14 I started a 10 day trip from Walker Lake. Thank you to Yosemitejim for reassuring me about road conditions to the Walker Lake Trailhead, and to Chick-on for permit rules and the shuttle bus information to Mono Pass when I asked in February.
The trip started at the trailhead near Walker Lake
I had read that the trail was steep and in bad shape, but at least this year it seemed

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Nice Trip Report Andrew F.
I did this same loop in the opposite direction in September 2012. Somehow it took me 10 days....... I did do a side trip to Bench Lake- very nice.
Did you find this old cabin in Simpson Meadow. I found it on a layover day. I needed it before doing that 4000ft climb out to Dougherty Meadow.
It is easier for my old knees to go up something like that than com

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Yosemite rangers are not know for a wink and a nod. They can, however, be very helpful. If you need to change you itinerary, stop by the backcountry office the afternoon before you go in. I've found they have a frequently have a spot except for things like Half Dome.
The haul out of the Valley to Little Yosemite Valley isn't that bad if you pace yourself. Starting early helps to.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra There a pond below Crown Lake that has some camping with views in the rock ledges on the east side.
The north side of Mule Pass also has some good camping with Views and lakelets. Hope you have/had a good trip.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I can try to answer some of this.
Problem bears are mainly a problem at night. However bears are opportunist, and will rip open your pack if they come across it unguarded. Put the pack where you can see it when you swim. If you are well above tree line you can usually leave the pack, but it is always safer not to leave food and cosmetics in the pack.
As for the suitcases in the back of the

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Make sure not to skip Benson Lake. Sometimes people get tired, or in a hurry, and miss it. It is not to be missed. Largest beach of any Sierra lake I have ever seen.
I passed through the area in July a few years ago. Later, when people asked me if I went alone I said " I was never alone, the mosquitos were always with me". The zipper on my tent door broke on that trip, making avoid

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Of course I'm confused at why da heck no one responds either.
Maybe I'm da problem.
Nonsense. I very much enjoy reading your posts, and it's obvious a lot of other people do too. We just may not have much to add.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra On the third day he will whine. I finally realized he was just going because I wanted to go. After he "closed" the entire Grand Canyon as a "revegetation area" after an eight day trip, I realized I would be better if I hiked with a friend. Then, when the friends started annoying me, I realized that sometimes it's nice to just go.
He is happy to look at my pictures and liste

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thanks,
I now have the two permits, and have looked up the bus schedule, and not afraid of the road anymore. Thank you both. Assuming I get the time off work, I'm good to go.
Thanks again, L
