Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Jeez, that article practically made it sound like they were being banned from the park. Guess he'll just have to pay for his rooms at the Ahwahnee now. Poor baby. :-(

My understanding is that with an El Nino you can get a wet winter but not for sure. If no El Nino then no wet winter.
QuoteJohnC
Can somebody translate that into layman's terms? I've understood that an El Nino would tend to bring with it a very wet winter. Hopefully that is the case?
But presumably, the odds are much higher for a wet winter if El Nino occurs, than if it doesn

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion You mentioned wanting to go in late April. While that can be a great time to visit, you could also find both Glacier Point Road and Hwy 120 still closed. Coming from where you are it would be a shame to lose all that access. If you are flexible enough to make plans on short notice, I would wait for those roads to open first. Certainly at least GPR. Reservations around that time of year are still

JohnC.... I have used my Senior Pass not only in all "reservable" NPS campgrounds in Yosemite (including Tuolumne Meadows) but all across the western states, including entrance fees. If in doubt, I'd call ahead.
I believe you since you say you did get the discount. The web page just doesn't make that clear. Thanks for the confirmation.

Yes, JohnC. Your Senior Pass will save you 50% on campsites in addition to the free entrance.
See this: http://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html
Thanks. But, the fine print there says "in general" the discount applies to campsites. No mention of any specific parks that do or don't discount. Have you actually used it there?
Thanks also to snorkus.

Going from Hwy 99 directly to Hwy 140 is fine too. Also Merced is a great city to pick up your final supplies for Yosemite. It has a Costco near Hwy 99 (only a couple of miles north of the Hwy 140 turnoff) that also sells very low-priced gasoline (though other independent Merced gas stations often match Costco gasoline prices).

Definitely try taking Hwy 140 instead of Hwy 41.
Concur with Plawrence on the time thing. I used to pull my trailer going 140 and I seem to remember it was only 25 minutes or so more than going 41.
If you are coming north on 99 instead of going 41 to 49, you can go past 41 in Fresno, stay on 99 til just north of Chowchilla and turn rig

It's really not that much longer time-wise to take Hwy 140 from the Central Valley (versus Hwy 41) when approaching Yosemite from the south. According to Google Maps it only about 15 minutes longer (which is close to what I've found driving the different routes myself).
Hwy 41 is the slowest road into Yosemite, even in GOOD weather, since there are extremely very

All the photos I've seen show that it's basically dry. There might be a damp path, but not much flow. Still, the light has looked quite impressive: not my photo
Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured. Although there is a slight chance of rain Saturday night into Sunday.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion So has anybody seen Horsetail in the last few days and could comment on the water flow? I can't really judge well on the web cam. But I'm guessing it isn't very good. I'm taking a trip to Klamath Falls this weekend and am considering swinging by Yosemite on the way home (next Monday or Tuesday) if Horsetail is worth attempting.
Thanks.

I wouldn't expect much difference.
That was kind of my guess but I was hoping it would be a little warmer. I'm kind of curious about Housekeeping and would like to try staying there at least once.
Housekeeping will be just A LITTLE BIT warmer than Curry, but not by much. At most, it would be about 5º F warmer. To stay warm at Housekeeping in early May,

If you want to use a microwave to cook then Housekeeping would be a good choice over Curry. Although, I personally would not want to lug a microwave to the park. One of my friends who has stayed at both the tent cabins in Curry and Housekeeping did say that they preferred Curry over Housekeeping because it has a door that can lock versus just the canvas pull curtains at Housekeepi

People either love Housekeeping or hate it. I have friends who swear by it because they like having a semi camping experience where you have a fire and can cook which you can't do at Curry but still have the beds and the electricity. Other friends hate it because you can't close off the canvas completely and it can be cold and damp. I have never stayed at Housekeeping so I can
