I think there's some confusion, at least in my own mind.
There are no shuttle buses running within the valley this year (nor were there last year). In past years there were shuttles (a) in the eastern end of the valley (frequent, the Valley shuttle) as far west at Yosemite Lodge going to Ahwahnee, Happy Isles, etc., and (b) in the western end of the valley out to Bridalveil falls (less freque

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Haven't been to YNP since the corona thing started, used to be you could park at any of the day-use lots and take the shuttle to Happy Isles, then walk over the bridge to the trailhead. But I understand there are no shuttles this year. You might need to park at Curry and walk to Happy Isles.

Just to add though...near the Tioga entrance, about the same altitude to gain is the Gaylor Lakes TH. IMHO, a much better day hike if only have one day to visit.

At Tioga entrance you start at 10K elevation and at Elizabeth Lake TH you start at 8600, don't know if that makes a difference for most people. Both good day hikes, both scenic, in different ways (hike to EL is lar

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra As I said, I've been disappointed with Aramark and the things you mention are among the reasons why. But keeping the slopes at Badger Pass closed during the winter - I doubt that was Aramark's call or preferred outcome. I think killing the TM shuttle was short-sighted (and not updating the web site to reflect the cancellation was reprehensible), but it was understandable: some bean-counter at A

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion While I have been unimpressed with Aramark in the 5 years its has been operating the concessions, it's still in this to make a profit. It makes its money by renting rooms and platform tents and by selling food and merchandise. I have not seen Aramark's contract with NPS, but I doubt that it includes a clause that says Aramark gets paid if its facilities can't open due to acts of God and the like.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion IIRC, the closest lot to the Elizabeth Lake trailhead is in horse campsite loop in the TM campground, and it's unlikely they'll let you in without a TM campground reservation (but of course it never hurts to ask). So you'll likely need to park at the TM Visitors' Center as you've proposed and walk along the JMT (or along the road to the campground entrance), or in the lot by the platform tents d

I wonder how many other people will try this before someone dies and the park service prohibits further attempts...
Takes a lot of effort to get to the top of HD in the snow, including some facility with climbing on ice. One of the guys who did this has lived in Yosemite since he was a little kid - even worked there as a ranger - and only tried this now. If you can make it to the

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Nice pics! I gotta visit some of these places. And the dead saguaro with the interior exposed was cool.
Love the "dangerous snakes and insects" sign that shows a snake and a ... scorpion. Someone needs to learn some basic taxonomy.

General Discussion Ok, I'll bite: I don't think I've seen "Altusky Peak" on any map. Where is it? Is this one of these peaks that on the USGS topo maps is only labeled with the elevation? Or maybe it's the peak just to the south of Unicorn Peak (based on the duo's report of January 24, 2018)?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Nice, thanks for sharing. I especially like the sunset photos at 4:19 and 4:45. And as usual, I'm envious.
I'm pleased to know that not only was I able to identify several of the many spots I've never been to (on the basis of your gang's old TRs), but actually I know exactly where some of those photos are b/c I was there (and I'm not talking about the tunnel view photo that you can just driv

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Eeek, thanks for posting this - checked last week but didn't see anything and thought they might not be up there this winter.
Balzaccom, look at the original post on the NPS site and you'll get the photos too: https://www.nps.gov/yose/blogs/update-for-december-31-2020.htm. Made my day.

Cheaper to buy it already cooked at the local concession than to pay the fine. Plus no risk of falling into the hot spring...but would have made for a Darwin Award if he had.

My tent lines are already reflective thanks to REI.
So I camped for a night in Lyell Canyon a few weeks ago on my way to Vogelsang, I woke up in the morning to find that a fellow backpacker had stashed his bear canister well away from his tent (good), but 10 feet away from mine (bad!). And it wasn't nighttime or anything. It was obvious to him that my campsite was there. Still w

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra What Balzaccom said, although instead of going down into the valley, on your last day you could go from LYV back to GP along the panorama trail. That way you could also be a little more leisurely on the other days, or use the time to explore a bit.
I think Shaffer in his book suggests doing this loop in the opposite direction: from GP along panorama to LYV, then up the Merced River canyon,

well, using that logic, we should appreciate that he's offering unemployed people a $200 weekly supplement to their unemployment benefits. the money's he's signed off on is theatre to repair his damaged image, not a serious attempt to provide NPS with $ it needs to "fix" its infrastructure needs.
I don't follow you. You have a problem with allocating money to the NPS? No

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion All kidding aside, didn't he say this while signing a bill that authorizes $1.9 billion annually for the next few years to fix infrastructure at national parks? I find it hard to complain about that.

Classic. Don't talk about stuff if you don't know about it.
Well....
1. My GPS also says "Yo-semite". So maybe he's got a gig lined up as a GPS voice for after his current job.
2. Be thankful that the word "TRUMP" in 1000-foot high letters hasn't been etched into the face of Half Dome or El Capitan.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I think the most recent edition is from 2006. It's been republished since then (I think I bought mine in 2013 or so) but I don't think it's been updated. Not that's so critical for the trails, but some of the contact info and procedures have changed in the interim (e.g. the need for HD permits).

Wow, this is insightful.
Hope everyone in the park and in the neighboring communities is staying safe. Mariposa County had so few cases, and while they don't have many, they are having more positive cases. I have heard from friends that they have been seeing people in the stores and eating places in Yosemite not wearing masks and not practicing social distancing and t
