I've squished two of them in the past couple weeks. If you wonder if they have brains, check the road kill, the evidence is there.

There is an unusual phenomon where a vehicle killed dead ground squirrel will be fed on by others and these then hit by more cars. I have seen situations with 5-10 ground squirrel dead as collateral damage from one initial roadkill.
