There is an erruption in the population of the butterfly, the California Tortoise Shell (Nymphalis californica) along El Portal Road between Windy Point, to down past the hotel at parkline. This beautiful orange and
brown butterfly is being killed by vehicles in the thousands in this area. While complete avoidance of hitting butterflies is not possible, the carnage can be substantially reduced if drivers reduce their speed. At around 25 mph, the butterflies tend to be swept over the vehicle unharmed. At faster speeds, the butterflies are struck in large numbers by the grills and windshields of vehicles. So during this period (now through June), please slow down and enjoy this spectacle.

In most years California Tortoise Shells are a relative uncommon species. But in certain years, they emerge in overwhelming numbers. This species could be responsible for our county’s name, Mariposa, which is Spanish for butterfly. The larvae of the species feed mostly on ceanothus shrubs. Several generations of egg-larvae-pupa-adult metamorphosis may occur in spring-summer, but the butterflies tend to move progressively higher in elevation as the year advances. Some scientists believe this is because plants at these elevations have new, tender growth, and lower levels of tannins later in the season, making them more nutritious for larvae

What a bunch of loaded, leftist words:

"killed"
"avoidance"
"carnage"
"struck"

Sounds more like neocon words to me.

Modified to suit Vince's preferences:

"The population of this international-orange and dirt-brown pest is being managed by volunteers in large SUV's and motor homes driving at speeds adequate to the task. For those worried about their cute little hybrid cars who would rather not help manage these pests and let others do all the work, the mess on their cutesy vehicle can be reduced, but not eliminated, by driving to their wine-and-cheesers and quiche parties at speeds below 25mph. Driving at faster speeds, their cars are prime targets for these insects who often realize they're useless and often decide to end it all in a blaze of glory by impacting a high-speed vehicle, which is a win-win situation for drivers who need to 'get there' and for loser depressed butterflies who will die eventually anyway.

Warning: do not use these butterflies for target practice! They're too thin to stop a bullet, and you might hit something else like your beer cooler. Besides, last year, some guy got a big fine for starting a fire from shooting, which is probably a violation of the second amendment, but still watch it."

There, how's that? 8^)

Gary,
The use of multisyllable words will prevent Vince from understanding your satire (or of even reading it). This is good. After all, we don't want to drive him off since he is the nearest thing to a Valley Girl that this forum has.

Thank you for the pretty picture, FF.

Last weekend, I saw clusters of beautiful tiny lt. blue butterflies in the meadows. They never flew higher than about 10" off the ground, and they were always in danger of being stepped on.
