I have a pretty good idea, although it is more spike than usual. It is a fungus or saprophyte-type vegetation, maybe 2-1/2- 3 inch in diameter.

Obviously from "that" photo it is a "fuzzy" white pointy fungination.

(I got pretty much the same when I copied the photo and zoomed in)

(so do you agree with my assessment? (i.e. pg. 11))

My guess was "Sculptured Puffball" pg. 11

Seems to be a Calbovista subscupta and a Calbovista scupta. Not sure which.

BTW, the interpretive ranger at Sequoia reached for his "behind the desk" copy of Laws book when I asked about a particular squirrel. Appears to be well regarded.

(my question to the ranger concerned "chickaree" vs "chickadee" )
