Rafting/Floating in the valley
May 10, 2007 10:33AM
Looks like highs this weekend will be in the 70's and river depth is less than 6.5' (right now it is low 4's)

Does anyone know:

1) Will rafting/floating be allowed/advised this weekend?

2)Will Curry be renting rafts?

3)If curry rents rafts, are dogs allowed in the rafts?

4)If we bring our own raft, is there a shuttle at take-out and can we bring the raft on the shuttle bus?

Thank You

I think that stuff is run by DNC, you could try calling them:

This is listed on the website as "Activites Information" phone number

Here's information about rafting in the Valley (you probably already know this, but in case someone else wants to know)

http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/water.htm

"Rafting
Rafting along the Merced River is popular during summer. You can rent a raft (typically in June and July, but it varies from year to year, depending on water level) or bring your own. (Other nonmotorized vessels, such as kayaks, are also permitted.)

Rafting is permitted on the Merced River between Stoneman Bridge (near Curry Village) and Sentinel Beach Picnic Area between 10 am and 6 pm. Rafting is not permitted whenever the river stage (depth) reads 6.5 feet or higher and the sum of air temperature and water temperature is less than 100°F. You must have a personal flotation device immediately available for each occupant of the raft.

Rafting is also permitted on the South Fork of the Merced River in the Wawona area.

Some visitors enjoy kayaking the calm waters of Tenaya Lake."

when i go there, i bring my own tire tinner tubes and float down the river with those.

be VERY careful.. a few years ago i did this with my kids and almost lost one of them (he was about 12 yrs old at the time).. in some places the water is very fast... it doesn't have to be deep at all.. at one point, we had a hard time crossing the river in 1 foot of water because it was so fast.

always!!!! wear a life jacket! i don't care how good you THINK you are, wear one.

Like I always say, "if you can't laugh at yourself, let me do it".
