OJAI -- Some residents in Ojai are outraged after a large black bear was euthanized after it climbed a tree....

Black bears are so completely harmless, that's too bad.

They are not completely harmless. But this one certainly wasn't a threat. It was just scared and hiding in a tree. Sigh.

I certainly wouldn't approach one closer than maybe 50 feet, especially if it has food. But for the most part, they have a natural fear of people and if you keep the enticements away from them, they're just another critter like a deer or a squirrel.
