Why do bighorn sheep rams have those big curly horns?

The better to stare down Dodge Ram trucks on the interstate.

It sure worked Tuesday afternoon just west of the Bonner-Interstate 90 exit, when a herd of about 30 bighorns wandered across both lanes of the freeway plus the frontage road and the exit ramps. Rams would stand in the roadway and glare at traffic, while their ewes and lambs would scramble across. Although a number of motorists put their anti-lock brakes to a severe test, no one lost a hood ornament during the wildlife parade.

If successful, sheep project could lead to a hunt

SINCLAIR — It’s been more than 25 years since orange-clad hunters have combed the rugged hills and snow-capped rocky crags of central Wyoming’s Seminoe Mountains in search of bighorn sheep.

That could change in the next few years if an ambitious bighorn sheep transplant effort can sufficiently re-establish the Seminoe/Ferris Mountain Herd Unit.

“That’s part of why we’re going through all this effort to re-establish this population of bighorn sheep,” said Bob Lanka, regional information supervisor with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The agency is heading the transplant effort. “We think that at some point in time ... hopefully this herd will get productive enough to allow sheep hunting again in the future.”..........
