ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2009) — The faint tug of the sun and moon on the San Andreas Fault stimulates tremors deep underground, suggesting that the rock 15 miles below is lubricated with highly pressurized water that allows the rock to slip with little effort, according to a new study by University of California, Berkeley, seismologists.

Personally, I have always been skeptical about the whole sun-moon tide thing.

It should be noted that these tremors are occuring very deep below the fault. It's my understanding the reason the San Andreas is so dangerous is because it has not moved at all since the great quake that destroyed San Francisco 100+ years ago . When this built up pressure finally releases the fault could move as much as 8-12 feet!

The San Andreas fault is around 800 miles long. Portions of it have moved since the '06 quake.

The two major quakes since then were the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which I remember very well, and the 2004 Parkfield quake.

We are due for another very large quake on the San Andreas fault (and others like the Hayward fault). The reason is that the small quakes that have happened have not kept up with the added stress imposed by the shifting tectonic plates.
