.AN UNSEASONABLY COLD UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL MOVE ONSHORE INTO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA THIS WEEKEND. MOUNTAIN SNOW SHOULD BEGIN LATE TONIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING ACROSS THE NORTHERN AND COASTAL MOUNTAINS AND THEN SPREAD SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE SIERRA NEVADA ON SATURDAY. THIS STORM WILL BRING PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW AND WIND TO THE REGION DURING SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED OVER THE MOUNTAINS...WITH 2 TO 3 FEET OF SNOW POSSIBLE ACROSS THE HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA BY SUNDAY EVENING. AS COLDER AIR MOVES IN LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...SNOW COULD ACCUMULATE AS LOW AS THE UPPER FOOTHILL ELEVATIONS NEAR 3000 FEET AND POSSIBLY EVEN LOWER ACROSS THE SHASTA LAKES AREA.

SNOW LEVELS ON SATURDAY WILL START BETWEEN 4000 AND 5000 FEET...BUT THEN LOWER TO AS LOW AS 3000 FEET BY SATURDAY NIGHT. PRECIPITATION WILL CONTINUE ON SUNDAY WITH SNOW LEVELS CONTINUING AROUND 3000 FEET...AND LOCALLY LOWER ACROSS THE SHASTA LAKES AREA. IN ADDITION...SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL INCREASE TO SPEEDS OF 15 TO 30 MPH WITH STRONGER GUSTS OVER THE RIDGES.

LIGHT SNOW WILL DEVELOP BY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. SNOW WILL BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY. SNOW LEVELS WILL BEGIN BETWEEN 4500 AND 5500 FEET...BUT THEN LOWER TO BETWEEN 3000 AND 4000 FEET FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY. IN ADDITION...SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO SPEEDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH MUCH HIGHER GUSTS NEAR THE PASSES AND OVER RIDGES. THIS WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.
TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 3 FEET ARE POSSIBLE BY SUNDAY EVENING ABOVE 6000 FEET WITH 10 TO 20 INCHES BETWEEN 4000 AND 5000 FEET. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW COULD ACCUMULATE DOWN TO 3000 FEET.
