last minute rooms?

I am pulling together a trip to Yosemite last minute, will do some backpacking but also would like to camp a few nights in the park. All online reservations are full, any insider's tip for picking up campsites at the last minute (am looking at week of August 13th, am totally flexible).

Show up at one of the various 1st come, 1st served campgrounds in the morning and look for a spot. If there are no empty spots, walk around and see if anyone plans to leave that day.

If it isn't a Friday or Saturday, you can be almost certain to get a site a Yosemite Creek or Porcupine Flat. They don't usually fill up during the week.

I went to Yosemite back in June without reservations on a weekend. We had no problem getting a spot at Bridalveil Creek campground which is first come first serve. To our surprise it never completely filled the entire weekend we were there. It's a little far from the Valley, up Glacier Point Road. So, if you can't get a spot in the valley at the cancelation office, you can always try there.

Tamarack Flat on Tioga Rd. is just outside the valley, too. Yosemite Creek campground is a little further and down a long dirt road, but it's very pretty.
When you pick up your permit, you can also inquire about backpacker's campgrounds where you can stay the night before and the night after your backpacking trip with a valid permit.

There's also something you can do where you show up in the late afternoon somewhere in the valley and they can tell you if there are any no-shows for reserved camping reservations. Kind of a pain when you could be out somewhere else. But it's an option.

There are some forest service campgrounds right outside the park if you are arriving in the evening and just need a place to crash for the night. Where are you coming from? Dimond O is nice, but not sure if it's full in the summer.

It's on Evergreen Road, the road you take to Hetch Hetchy.

There are these others too http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/stanislaus/groveland/camping/index.shtml
