1 dead, 2 injured in bear attack at MT campground

By MATT VOLZ

HELENA, Mont. —
At least one bear rampaged through a campground Wednesday near Yellowstone National Park in the middle of the night, killing one person and injuring two others during a terrifying attack that forced people to hide in their cars as the animal tore through tents.

Three separate attacks left a male dead and a female and another male injured at the Soda Butte campground. The female suffered severe lacerations from bites on her arms, and the surviving male was bitten on his calf. Both were hospitalized in Cody, Wyo.

Nearly killed me a couple of times.

Deer have been reported as more deadly in Yosemite for many years.

Across North America, I bet the most dangerous animal (based on numbers of directly caused deaths) would be bees.

Deer are more dangerous because they are plentiful, stupid, and love to jump through windshields.

Bear are far more rare and mostly avoid people.

They've also attacked and killed people in Yosemite. Nobody has been killed by a bear.

Here's a story about a man being killed by a deer attack: http://www.sfgate.com/flat/archive/2005/10/20/news/archive/2005/10/20/state/n050930D10.html

I wonder if the investigation at Yellowstone will reveal they had food in their tent?

Some of the reports I read were that authorities have stated that all food of the victims was properly stored, and this campground has bear boxes. It's not a given that there will be bear boxes in many campgrounds in the Rockies.
