Do you remember when? (1998)
January 27, 2011 03:46PM
One of my projects that I've started on this year is recording Hi8 video to DVD. (I was late to the game and got my first videocam in 1997.) Anyway this last weekend I was recording video from Dec 1998. We had to go to Curry for a craft show. It was storming so we chose to come up 140. The highway ended up being closed until 4:30 each evening because of construction, so we tried to cut around by going through Foresta. Ended up that there was a bridge out there (from the floods of 1997,) so we had to backtrack. We ended up waiting for the road to open and we were escorted up to the 120 junction. Highway 140 was still one lane in places, almost two years after the flood.

You tried going up Foresta Road? Wow.

Wasn't the big portion that was out the section just East of the 120/140 interchange?

We went backpacking a lot then too (go figure) wink but.. didn't take a camera
along then... (dig-it-all is darn nice). I remember the park was not super busy
after the flood... everyone thought the entire park was flooded or something.

After the flood, the park was closed for a couple months. Maybe when it opened, it took a while for the word to get around.

Well, the flood was in Jan of 1997 and my video was Dec 1998, so it was almost 2 years from the time of the flooding. The single lane on 140 was definately west of 140/120.

And we did have video from June 1997...we drove into Yosemite Valley from 120.( From Manteca...the pass wasn'r open yet. Highway 395 through Walker Canyon didn't open til around July 4 1997...have video of that, too.) No road issues except it was bumpy when entering the valley.

In June '97, we observed that the campsite that we had stayed in the previous June was gone (riverside in Lower Pines,) the cabin at the Lodge that we stayed in Dec 1996 was condemned, as was K dorm, my old employee residence. And, of course, Happy Isles was quite the mess when we started to hike up Half Dome. Surprisingly the bridge over Nevada Falls had been repaired.

That is if you have your photos on the web...I'm used to being able to attach right from my computer files.

Just tried that for the heck of it...

Well, there's a "x" where the pic should appear...

I have some photos at http://www.webshots.com/user/hikerchick395

They are mostly scanned prints from film. I haven't used that website much since I finally went digital.

As for youtube(y) ...I am on dialup...slow backwoodsy dialup...

The only youtube "video" I have is a time lapse that my nephew put on...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYe6S4OxOCw

From your site, on the right hand side there... It has a box with "link to this picture" and 3 options.
Pick the size and then snag the "post in a forum" stuff and sticky here:

Those troll pics are about 18 years old. (Look at how small the pine trees are by the chapel.)

Guess that I'll wait and see if this site adds an attachment feature someday. As I said, I'm not actively adding photos to Webshots any more...

You could drive through Foresta?

We went down to see Foresta Fall a couple of years ago, when we were staying at HH (before the fire). While we were slowly bumping along in our SUV, a sedan came barreling down behind us and we kindly pulled over to let them pass. The continued on a ways, and we thought nothing of it. We got the fall, and stopped to look around and take pictures. All of a sudden, here comes that same sedan, back up the road, going even faster, the woman in the passenger seat looking like she was about to blow a fuse, and the man driving was about to explode. We smiled and they kept going.

Out of curiosity, when we were done at the fall, we drove down to see what was beyond it. A locked gate.

The next day, we drove down to the Merced River entrance to see the big rock slide (we're weird like that), and saw "Foresta Road" and it all made sense. I guess they were looking at an old map that showed the road going through and they thought they'd save a lot of time going that way.

I've driven through Foresta itself (but starting from Big Meadow). My wife & I hiked quite a ways down the Foresta Road (to beyond the Crane Creek & Little Crane Creek Falls below Foresta Falls) last May and I can tell you that you'd need a pretty high clearance vehicle to drive it. I took close up pictures of the road surface at a couple points and some of them look almost like aerial views of Yosemite Valley (don't have time to hunt for the pix now but I'll post one or two later). Pretty cool looking but even the one mountain biker who passed us seemed to be choosing his path pretty carefully.

There's a wooden bridge over the Crane Creek Falls (don't know if that's the official name...my map just identified them as Falls) which would PROBABLY support a car but I'm not sure I'd want to test it (but then, I don't do a lot of off-roading so maybe I'm being overly-cautious about this one).

I have, however, read posts from people both here and elsewhere saying that they've driven the road from El Portal all the way up to Foresta (although I personally would be pretty pissed off if I was hiking the road and saw a vehicle on it).

Here's the sign on Foresta road (at the "junction" with Old Coulterville rd. way
before ever even entering Foresta itself):

Oh! That looks intriguing, to say the least! We have a fat-tire bikes, and we almost always bring them with us. May have to add that to the itinerary for this summer.

Thanks for sharing!

Ah... I re-read your post... they open the gate when the road is more or less clear.
If you have a relatively high clearance vehicle it all looks do-able from what I saw.
Rutted in places... but "they" filled places in with rocks to make it passable...
kinds wish I would have went down the entire road... but woulda prolly been really
late picking the old guy up coming down Crane Creek Rd.

I parked at the gate and hiked down to the lower falls (which are better IMO than the upper):

Since most prob. won't scramble down to the large low cascade... here ya go:

Ah... what the heck.. here's the upper cascade:

(the lower bridge is between these two) (i.e. above the lower... and below the upper... ) (if you get my drift)

Here's the big picture of the lower Foresta Falls:

Taken from between Buena Vista (the other one) and Eagle Peak (the other one):

Was quite irritated when I saw this after we had hiked down from Foresta to the first fall
(taken 2 years ago).
