ScienceDaily (Mar. 2, 2011) — Although the eastern cougar has been on the endangered species list since 1973, its existence has long been questioned. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) conducted a formal review of the available information and, in a report issued March 2, 2011, concludes the eastern cougar is extinct and recommends the subspecies be removed from the endangered species list.

Despite sightings in Canada, U.S. officials declare Eastern cougar extinct
By Randy Boswell, Postmedia News March 2, 2011

Did the cat come back? Or has the Eastern cougar — despite hundreds of reported sightings in recent decades — been dead and gone for 73 years?

It appears the answer depends on which side of the Canada-U.S. border the question is asked.

Less than a year after an Ontario government wildlife official investigating the matter declared his study had "verified that cougars do exist in Ontario," the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Wednesday that they don't — not in Ontario or any other Canadian province or American state in the northeastern part of the continent.

So if there are sightings, now they are automaticallly strays from the west or Florida? Here is one interesting link from Chicago. There are plenty of others east of the Mississippi, a simple search will reveal these articles
