I would like to start a discussion on this topic. But first, read this article from the Salt Lake trib:

Now introducing the Environmental President: George W. Bush

GOOD ONE!

One more rip. How is neglect maintaining 600 miles of trail a year?
O MY GOD! 200 Miles are not maintained! HOW IN HEAVEN will
people make it. I have an idea. Let's put Cell Phone towers in!
Problem solved.

Seriously, the maintaining the trails in Yosemite is hogwash IMO.
They go way overboard on the high sierra loop trails and completely
ignore other trails for decades (go hike out to North Mountain
(out of Miguel Meadow) if you want an example!)

I will let others slam the facilities as I prefer the backcountry. smiling smiley

As far as doubling the number of volunteers... From what I have
heard they haven't been that interested or they just get too many
already. (mcondron can tell you more...)

The invasive species... that's just a daunting task... Bush would probably
suggest to clear cut and start over... smiling smiley

This quote kinda scares me:
"The other part of it is that we need to go deeper and look at the governance of the National Park Service and the institutional processes of management."

" This ambitious goal includes spending up to $3 billion in increased philanthropic, partnership and government resources."

Sounds like political rhetoric to me.

Don't know how to make this a hot link:

http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/oct2007/2007-10-15-05.asp

Anyway, Half Dome has been bought by Taco Bell and is
now officially "The Taco Bell Bean Burrito Dome". People at the
bottom of the cables are entiled to 1 free bean burrito. Taco Bell
feels that this will lessen the number of people on the cables
.. or at least the spacing between them.

Chevron helped pay for the new trails at Lower Yosemite Fall. Their signage was rather minor; I think it just mentions something about being sponsored by Chevron in plain letters and without any logos. I'm not necessarily opposed as long as it's not clearly an ad.

The Golden Gate Bridge district was thinking of getting a sponsor to chip in a few million to build some interpretive signs. I don't think any of it was on bridge district property and not the Presidio (which has plenty of interpretive signs installed by the NPS). Popular outcry led to them scrapping the plan.

Partnership...sounds suspicious.

How long before a McDonalds opens up on the land where camp sites have been removed in the valley?

Will Chevron be writing an "environmental" pamphlet, to be given out at the entry staion, "educating" us about how drilling for oil in the highlands will actually help the wildlife?

Call me cynical. Maybe I am. But that's what "partnership" means when funding America's schools.
