I think it's Crotalus oreganus helleri.

No, Crotalus atrox prefers warmer areas.

The boy is currently tromping around the wilds of Santa Maria working on a project for the military base there. He called yesterday to saw that he came up on a rattler sunning itself. He had to make a couple of stomps to get its attention so it would slither off. Glad he saw it before he got too close and startled it.

There were at least 4 in the "exfoliating" layers.

Probably wouldn't have even noticed them if they would have kept quiet.
The vibration of me walking probably made them irritated and one buzzed.
When first looked I said "dang, dat one big snakey"...
could hear them slithering around between the two holes.

Snakes is nature. Nature good.

Those were taken last weekend very very close to HH Dome.
