Hites Cove update?
February 07, 2008 03:20PM
Hello all,
already dreaming of my next visit... Having no idea (yet) how heavy the winter snows have been in Yosemite wonder if any local folk or anyone in the know could advise if Hites Cove will likely be walkable come mid-late April? Has the traffic miasma been solved to allow sane access onto the trail? I was there 2 years ago right after the rockslide and ended up not being able to walk Hites. Hoping this might be the year.
Thank you, a rabid tromper

Hite Cove Trail should be completely accessible by April - in fact, except in instances of extremely rare super-heavy snowfall at low elevation (has this ever happened?), I cannot imagine that it would ever be inaccessible to a serious walker. I would not hesitate based on trail conditions - just exercise usual caution in the event of landslides in the south fork canyon. Traffic now flows well through the slide area with only modest delays. Just park at the space near Savage's and you should be all set.

The highway was already open last spring per my above link. Its pretty rare for any snowfall below El Portal at 3k. And if it does, the land always has enough heat that it doesn't take long to melt off. I'll predict given the rainfall this winter that we ought to have an above normal crop of lower Merced River canyon wildflowers this spring.
