In an attack that's rare, but not unheard of, a grizzly bear apparently killed an adult horse in the Carter Mountain area, according to the Game and Fish.

I would suppose a somewhat incapacitated horse or an ambush.

Perhaps a dead horse found by the bear and munched on.

Unlikely one that could move normally.

But surely to be used as an excuse for shooting bears.

You shouldn't be so cynical.

The article stated that Game & Fish aren't going to hunt down the bear. And the owner of the horse seems to understand that Grizzlies are just part of the landscape and losing an occasional livestock (usually a cow) to a grizzly comes with the territory.

I understand that a grizzly usually "protects" the food source after a kill until consumed, by staying close by or by burying, which does not appear to have happened in this case. I suppose a sow with cubs could have chased off another bear, but if it was a boar, it seems unlikely
