Grand Canyon, Ariz. - The New Water Fire, on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon near Meadview, Arizona, was declared "controlled" on Friday, August 19.

The lightning-caused New Water Fire was discovered on August 3 on private land just south of the Grand Canyon National Park boundary. Burning primarily in grass and brush with some pinyon-juniper, the fire quickly spread into the park and onto lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Through an interagency effort, the fire was contained on August 7.

Since then, fire personnel have been working to reinforce containment lines; and once it was determined that there was no longer any foreseeable threat from the fire, it was declared "controlled."

The National Park Service, BLM and BIA have cooperatively agreed that any further monitoring of the fire or decisions about its status will be made by the BIA - Truxton CaƱon Agency, as the controlled fire is closest to their base of operations.
