How long is this expected to last? Am battling hubby over our 10 y.o. recent head injury which includes skull fracture concussion. Has to wear a C-collar for 3-4 weeks which would mean it coming off 1 week before vacation at best.We are expected to check in 7 27/08. Camping at TM + hiking to wherever extended family (teen/older) group wants to go...and we've taken some pretty good day hikes over the years - glen aulin, dog lake, elizabeth, spiller, even hiking the toloumne upstream a couple of miles, just past the foot bridge is a big concern for me given the extent of the injury. I even wonder about hanging around Tenaya given the altitude and such. Everything is a concern to me given the uneven hiking and campground paths, altitude, etc. If there is considerable smoke, I worry this may also exacerbate things (decreased oxygen levels?) Hubby thinks it's no big deal, "just work it out". Would anyone else be concerned about the altitude level changes ?(we live in San Diego area) I know I always err on the side of caution (I'm a mom, that's what we do best ;-), but why not especially in this circumstance???? We did Yosemite with a 15 y.o. seven months out of back surgery, so I really don't feel like I'm being "overzealous". If anyone has similar experiences to share, I'd sure like to hear. Thanks,

I live at Tahoe and its been off and on here. Right now its especially bad. I would hope it'll be over by the 27th. but there's no way to tell for sure. I'd suggest wait until closer to your check-in date and see how it goes.

I'm recovering from a major brain surgery I had in Feb. 08 (8 hour craniotomy to remove a "baseball" size benign meningioma brain tumor.) My neurosurgeon said I had no restrictions as far as altitude goes and Tuolumne Meadows was fine to go camping at. My skull is going to take a year to heal, so I can't fall either or it'll mean big trouble. Maybe 10 y.o. could wear a bike helmet while hiking. Not sure of the impact the air quality might have. I live in the San Diego area, too. Best wishes to all of you.

Thanks Rebecca, we saw a neuro dr. yesterday and they said pretty much same thing as far as camping, altitude etc., but yeah, another fall or head bump right now would not be good even with a bike helmet. A new issue came up which may mean very limited or no hiking pending test results.

So are you going to Tuolumne Meadows this year? I wish you all the best in your recovery :-)

It sure looks bad today.

How so? I worry about the affects of lightening and thunderstorms.

The Turtle Dome camera showed nothing but thick haze in the Valley all day. A few good drenching thunderstorms would be a good thing right now.
