A lioness, enticed by a deer carcass, had entered a cage with a one-way door at the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve just west of Temecula. Like 61 others before her, the 98-pound cat was fitted with a radio transmitter so Vickers and his UC Davis colleagues can track her movements. Will she, Vickers wants to know, follow Temecula Creek where it crosses under Interstate 15 and continue through suburbia to protected habitat in the San Bernardino National Forest? Or will she wander southeast to the Palomar Mountains in San Diego County?
