Indeed, a motive might be helpful. Perhaps Norman Clyde can give us a clue - sceance, anybody?

Could be some psychological issues here. There are many strange links and URLs to a John (Thomas) Christiana in San Francisco aged 46. Has a hiker/climber history. Not necessarily the same John Christiana but ???.
No presumption of guilt implied or stated. Caution with the myspace URL (X rated)

Schulman Grove Visitor Center update
Outposts must clarify that John Christiana, the man being held in Bishop on felony charges, including grand theft, vehicle theft and burglary, has not been connected to the fire that destroyed the Schulman Grove Visitor Center at the entrance to Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, or to vandalism to the White Mountain Research Station.

There is a special gathering Saturday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. at Schulman Grove to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest as a protected reserve.

I'll have to see how much gas money I have left...just drove from Reno to Mount St Helens this past weekend...but I think I can come up with enough to go to this event and find out about donations to rebuild the visitor center.

P.S. here's me at the south rim of Mount St. Helens with Mt. Rainier in the background. Saturday 9/13. Man that hike sucks! If you're not climbing over jagged lava rocks your slipping in pumice and ash!
