At this point of the year is it too early to predict much lower river flows for the summer? I realize the high country still has several months of snow weather remaining but one would think we are well into a diminished snowpack season.

The closest thing I have to a crystal ball is a large old boat compass and since I never take it anywhere it always says the same thing.

Actually, I don't care that much about water flow in July other than how it may affect the mosquito population. I need to hear predictions of low mosquito presence this summer. It does not have to be true. I just need to hear it.

Jim, There will be no mosquito problem (as long as I am somewhere in the park) because they will all being chomping on ME.

PS I have an old boat compass that floats in oil and is encased in brass (called a binicle, I think) maybe I should take a closer look at it

Seriously if it is early July you are guaranteed to have mosquitos.

Here's something I wrote on some other board when someone
asked about mosquitos:

-DEET is your friend.... Guaranteed to work. Other stuff is suspect..
-Deep Woods Off... that sort of thing... personally I would say don't
worry too much about the "ill" effects... unless you plan on using it for
weeks on end...
-Long Sleeves, Long Pants
-Camp or stop for breaks IN the wind... it will help keep them at bay
-Headnet. If you wear a baseball cap you can just have it on the rim
and when hiking it won't feel restricting... when you stop you can pop
it down to keep them off... with DEET they won't bite but will still drive
you nuts
-Keep hiking... typically the amount will very greatly by elevation...

I will be on the trails from 7/11 through 7/21. Lowest point will be Glen Aulin; highest will be Vogelsang Pass.

Day trip to Sunrise Lakes.
3-day, 2 nighter to Young Lakes, Glen Aulin, May Lake.
4-day, 3-nighter to Cathedral, Merced, Vogelsang, Rafferty Creek.
Day trip to Ten Lakes Pass.
If I don't have any gas left for the Ten Lakes 2,100' climb I may substitute
Porcupine Creek to North Dome/Indian Rock.
Departure date day trip to Lembert Dome (short route).

Hope to still be ambulatory by first day back at work.

Just saw Gary's post... I like his better...

I've noticed that when you stop for a break is when they usually attack, so it helps if you keep walking briskly in circles when you stop for a break.

Well, I guess it helps with the mosquitoes anyway...8^)

They're now reporting the state to be up to 74% of average for the date. That's a lot better than the 61% we had before the storm.
