Yosemite is home to quite a few orchid species. Here's one of them:

Corallorhiza striata

Is that a close-up of the dreaded Bog Orchid?

Cool. Where exactly did you see this? The wife is flower crazy and I HAVE
to take a picture of any flower we see just about. She says she cannot
recall ever seeing any Orchids.

This is just Lupine with a visitor:

What happened to the orchid discussion?
The Bog Orchid smells like sweaty feet apparently to attract flies or mosquitos (?dragonflies) for pollination. Usually those flowers with the nasty smells attract flies.

I know I have one at home... I'll put it on the dragonfly thread.

Ok one more I really like.
Indian Paintbrush in Matterhorn Canyon w/
Sawtooth and Matterhorn Peak in the background.

Don't have the equipment to get everything in focus.

Scream if you want to see:
- Mariposa Lily
- Harlequin Lupine
- Red Columbine
- Red Mountain Heather
- Fireweed
- Mule Ears
- Snow Plant
- Pussy Paws
- Monkey Flower
- Shooting Star

These are fairly common in Yosemite. These are the ones I can think of...
Anyway, the Indian Paintbrush:

Speaking of spiders, I was at the Eleanor campgrounds a few years ago with my 3 D cell halogen airplane beacon headlamp on (it was dark) and I noticed a purple glint about 15' away. Thinking someone had lost a ring or something I took a closer look and it turned out to be the eyeballs of a spider. That's it.

I LOVE bats!! I have bat boxes on the property and I go to the nature preserve and dusk to watch them chase bugs....you can hear the high pitched sonar (really!)

I stopped at Coso Junction one night on my way to Yosemite. There were moths flying around the lamps and bats were there eating them. It was the best view ever!

There is a place up north called Feather River Lodge (Grayeagle), and one of the "attractions" is that you can sit on the veranda and watch them pour out in a line at dusk -- breathtaking! I skipped supper to watch the bats.

Pix?

that kinda surprises me 'cause I would think that the insect population would not be so high around the HOT springs..the Yolo causeway between Sacramento and Yolo co. has thee best show in town...crowds gather to watch the show smiling smiley

Red Columbine in Pate Valley

on this occasion the wifey was once again irritated at me
(I'm very good at it)

and she says very sarcastically "COME ON Ansel!"
(that is her all fuzzy in the background glaring at me)

That spider was only interested in finding a female spider. You only see them during breeding season.

Found him... no wonder... he wandered off into Henry Coe SP
near Robinson Creek and the Rooster Comb.
(kinda irritated that it's not closer up... and in better focus)

Oh, what a great specimen! I am so used to the millions of Blue Columbine that you find close where I live -- the Red is great!

she would probably hate my habit of "Stop the Bus!!!" on the most cliffy, twisty roads for a ......cloud pic -- 20 of 'em...bracketed!
