Mount Starr King in Yosemite is named after him, but who was he, and why was he so famous?

“Many Californians have heard of Thomas Starr King, but not many are familiar with his vital role in the formation of the California we know today. Quite simply, Starr King, with the possible exception of Father Junipero Serra, is the most important man in the history of California.”

Great article - thanks.

Interesting though - " He climbed above the falls, attracted by a dome of granite towering 13,600 feet over the valley. Today it bears his name, Mt. Starr King."
It must have shrunk some over the years - as Mt. Starr King today only a bit above 9,000 ft elevation...Delaware North take its cut?

Ancestor of Chick-On? He is definitely worthy of that dome.

Thank you.

Couple of notes:
1 - maybe Dennis Hollingsworth should have done some research...
2 - sadly the picture of the dome there... in the article is not Mt. Starr King
maybe it's Mt. Ronald Reagan ?
(it's x7734)

More on Starr King in wikipedia...

National Statuary Hall Collection
California replaced its statue of Thomas Starr King with one of Ronald Reagan in 2009. The King statue now stands in Capitol Park at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

Chick-on is looking at you!
