An ambitious project to create a grove of giant sequoias (along with a smaller amount of coastal redwoods) in an estate in Ireland:
“The Giants Grove project aims to create, beside the gardens of Birr Castle, a living, enduring and inspiring tribute to Ireland’s diaspora. It will be in the form of the largest grove of giant redwoods outside California and is designed to signify the giant place that these sons and daughters have in our hearts. The grove will also contain about 25% of coastal redwoods – giants in height.
These redwoods were native here before the Ice Age began about 3 million years ago. So their return to Ireland will symbolise our hopes for visits home or even the return of cherished family members.”
