Google lost our site...we hate Google
April 11, 2020 08:52AM
When we first set up our website on Google sites, we chose that option because it allowed us to easily transfer photos from our Picasa photo pages to our website.

Then Google discontinued Picasa, and moved everything over to Google photos, which meant that all of our photo links were dead. It took us months to move them all over....grrrrr.

And then late last year Google announced that their Google Sites software was changing, and the platform we used for our website would no longer be supported. Now that's what I call customer service--what a ridiculous policy.

So we moved our entire site over to the new Google Sites platform. It's not as good for our purposed, doesn't all text wrapping for example, and it took hours and hours of time for us to move every page over.

And now Google itself can't find the new version of the site. We've talked to our domain host provider, Go-Daddy, who says that we've done everything right.

We've searched the Google help boards, which have a lot of other people with the same issue---search for us at backpackthissierra.com and you get the dreaded 404 message.

We hate Google with a passion.

So just in case you were looking for our site, you CAN still find it here, I think, if Google hasn't screwed this up too:

And we'll keep working on a solution. thanks to everyone who has contacted us about the problem. Maybe send a hate mail letter to Google...

Sorry to hear about your troubles. You illustrated a few of the many reasons I hate Google.

We area now on Wix, and all seems to work. They have been very professional and helpful-a great contrast to Google, for example.

Let me know if this link doesn't work for you....https://www.backpackthesierra.com/home

The main link works, as do some of the ones within the site (not that I've tried them them all). Some of the sections aren't populated yet, but I assume that's because moving things to Wix is an ongoing process and you haven't had time yet, or some of the stuff is still missing in the ether thanks to google. Interestingly, your link on the "dangers on the trail" page (https://www.backpackthesierra.com/dangers-on-the-trail) to "A story with a happy ending" took me to your blog, which still shows up even though hosted on google: https://sites.google.com/site/backpackthesierrabackup/home/our-blog/youknowhowtowhistledontyou.

Thanks Geezer. Yes-- we are slowly moving the rest of the site over to Wix. There are some 800 pages of content, so it is taking a while! Thanks for the feedback.

It does. But we are making progress. Bit by bit the new site is coming alive. We've moved all the blog posts over...but in lumps, by date, before 2020. And now we'll start posting normally again. sigh,

Of course, now that we have been off the radar for about a month, our traffic is way down. But that will build again over time. We just have so much content there that not even Google can ignore us forever..
